Kitley House Hotel

This is a lovely, quiet country house (Victorian) that is now a hotel (four-star, but it didn't stay that way). There is a very quiet and peaceful terrace with attractive views of the river and woods (we saw a wild barn owl). There is delicately cooked red snapper and goat-cheese tart to start, with very well-balanced tastes. It didn't fill you up before the main course, which was good, so you could enjoy it. We tried the sirloin, which was very tender and perfectly cooked. The puddings were okay, and the pear-and-almond tart didn't taste much of pear. It would have been nice to have more fruity desserts, as choices included quite heavy ones. There was an extensive wine list, with some bottles over £100, but houses started from around £15.
