You need to call the desk to let them know you will require dinner so that someone can come and cook it for you.
So as we arrive, we see the owner dining solo in the far corner of the open air table settings. For some reason, no one has made a note about our dinner request, so now there's a scramble going on in the kitchen to come up with something. As they set our table with very colorful placemats, Chuck and I are being serenaded by a coqui. If you've never heard these critters, they sound like their name: i.e. co-KEY a few times and then quiet. They are miniature frogs that are indigenous to Puerto Rico only. It's also the island mascot, as you will find this frog adorning souvenirs. In fact, Chuck is so intrigued that he decides to record the beast while it's croaking. And he does!
Dinner turns out to be quite romantic on the terrace as some soft rock comes through the speakers, and the coqui is doing his chant. We dine on red snapper, fried breadfruit, white rice and red beans. This is the sort of meal you eat very slowly while taking all of your surroundings in, and trying to engage all the senses. The night is pitch black, but you can hear the gentle murmur of the surf below. We notice that directly in front of us is a well stocked library and sitting room and vow to return in the morning to have a look.
We were able to get all sorts of cable channels in the room, and did pause on paradise for an hour as we watched the progress on the war in Afghanistan.
