Dining aboard The Ghan

A reader asked for more detail about dining service aboard The Ghan. I rode it in April, 1999, and so can’t remember specifics. I CAN tell you that the menu was heavy on Aussie beef and New Zealand lamb, and that food quality and service were easily comparable to upscale land-based restaurants. Several first-rate Australian red and white wines were available by the glass or bottle.
Wine and spirits were extra, but meals and non-alcoholic beverages were included in the ticket price for first-class passengers. Since the software DEMANDED a price range, I can tell you that the tab for a comparable meal with wine in a good Chicago restaurant would have been $45-60.
