Tippecanoe Place - Cool Atmosphere, Decent Food

You won't find anything avant-garde on the menu at Tippecanoe Place. It is a standard meat and potatoes kind of establishment. The prime rib was decent, the lamb chops were fairly good, the clam chowder was rich and delicious, the spinach salad had a refreshing vinaigrette - nothing that is going to blow the adventurous out of the water. However, it was all done well and our waitress was very nice. Didn't try the desserts - if you're interested, they are brought around on a cart so you can decide what strikes your fancy and they'll cut you off a piece right there.
Now, the house itself - very cool. It was built by a member of the Studebaker family (it was the father of the car-maker - this man had made his money through carriages). It is a stone, gothic-like building that clearly displays the wealth of its former owner. Some of the wood work in the molding and banisters is absolutely incredible. After dinner (or before if its busy) you're welcome to wander around the house at will. On the top third floor there seemed to be some closed off rooms, but for the most part you can snoop around the basement, main floor, and second floor to your hearts delight. They have some signs up to explain what the room used to be - ex. solarium, parlor, nursery, etc. Kind eerie in the more quiet parts of the house.
You can be casual. Not t-shirt and jeans casual, but dress shirt and jeans casual. It's both a decent meal and tiny historical outing in one.

My cullinary artrs vocational class went there, and it all was amaizing. Some people don't realize how much effort is put into a single entre. We met the head chef and everyone was verry pleased with thier meal. The mansion was gorgous and my "black tiger shrimp penne with a pesto sauce" was INCREADABLE!!! I recommend this place to anyone who would like a taste of fine dining.
BIG Let Down

I was extremely let down by this restaurant. The website hypes it up with pictures of their waiters in bow ties, how it's in this fabulous mansion, and has very high prices with an exquisite sounding menu. My husband and I took our in-laws there when they visited town, and it was embarrassing. First of all, the mansion is dirty, smelly, and has rooms you walk past that are old, broken down, and piled full of junk. Secondly, they seated us in this crappy little nook with no beautiful view of anything "grand", next to an industrial style heater blaring in our ears (and old junky space heaters are randomly placed all over by people's feet).
The ultimate let down is the food itself. I've never eaten such poor quality food at ANY restaurant. No one in our party enjoyed their food, even though most of us ordered their "specialties". I could barely force myself to even eat it at all, and only did out of manners because someone else was paying for our visit. The desserts were nothing better than you'd find at a dirty little diner, either (an oreo pie, a pecan pie, a generic cheesecake...).
I'm really infuriated that my in-laws paid $120.00 for a meal there, and will make a point to warn people NOT to waste their time or money there. If you want to tour a beautiful mansion in South Bend, visit the Oliver Mansion as part of the Studebaker/History Museum tour- it's right down the street. Then go eat somewhere else.

Tippecanoe Place is the old Studebaker mansion. It is very beautiful. It is very classy and serves great duck and steak. Many people stop for brunch after church. It is the best restaurant in South Bend!
