This is a 100-acre ancient Calusa Indian shell mound. Accessible only by boat, the island centers around a white clapboard inn built by mystery writer Mary Roberts Rinehart and her son in 1938. Today, the inn offers rustic guest rooms and cottages, plus a restaurant wallpapered entirely in autographed $1 bills. According to legend, a local fisherman tacked the first one to the wall so he would be guaranteed a cold beer on his next visit. Subsequent visitors followed suit, and today an estimated $20,000 covers the walls. The inn’s famous clientele, past and present, includes Ernest Hemingway, Walter Cronkite and Julia Roberts. Music fans will be interested to know it was the inn’s delectable fare that inspired Jimmy Buffet’s song "Cheeseburger in Paradise." Daytrippers can enjoy the inn’s hospitality and climb a wooden water tower for a spectacular view of Pine Island Sound.

This place had a very unique dining atmosphere, to say the least. The island is acessible only by boat and is frequented by many visiting boaters, sightseeing tours, and various other guests. This is a wonderful place to stop on a warm Florida afternoon for your favorite lunch and beverage.

One of the unique things that most people notice right away is that almost every inch of the older portion of the restaurant's dining area is covered with dollar bills, complete with the names of those who deposited the money. The tradition started long ago by fishermen visting the bar. They would place the dollar for times when the day's fishing was not so profitable. The tradition has been carried on by tourists and guests placing their bills in the same way.

If seafood is what you like then you will have come to the right place when you come to the Cabbage Key Resort Restaurant.

It is the only restaurant on the island but it draws patrons from not only the resort but also from the surrounding islands. A special boat arrives at lunch time every day bringing patrons from Sanibel Island.

The restaurant draws its share of parrotheads (Jimmy Buffet fans) to try the cheeseburger. The owner of the resort says Jimmy wrote the song 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' about his restaurant's cheeseburger.

Jimmy has been known to stop by for a visit when he is in the area. This restaurant is not only known for its cheeseburger but also its seafood dishes. Articles about the resort's food have appeared in newspapers and magazines around the world.
