Situated right on the Kenai Lake, this wooden roadside tavern-like building has a commanding view of the mountains and the lake. With excellent food and the view, it doesn't get much better.
Three for dinner, we sat on the outdoor porch next to a pot-bellied burning stove. We were entranced by the lake and watched a sunset where the sun crowned four mountain peaks, as if they had been spotlighted.
The fish was "to die for," though all around us, customers dined on steak, burgers, pasta, and vegetarian dishes. My two dining companions raved over halibut, salmon, and garlic mashed potatoes, while I committed gluttony over the crisp Caesar salad, black bean soup, and crab cakes prepared by a pro.
The atmosphere is relaxed, with music supplied by the bluesy Tone Brothers that night. With many locals there for the beer and the music, this is a down-home spot where one can mingle while enjoying Alaskan ales and great food.
