Like the other review said, Gunpowder can get quite crowded during peak times. Often time you can catch a live band on weekends and do some dancing. For you smoker's out there, there is a nice segregated room upstairs so you don't have to go outside and freeze or get rained on. The service is pretty average, unfortunately common to Tartu. My trick is to go ahead and order your next round when they bring your drinks. I always do make a point to visit this pub when I am in town.

The Gunpowder Cellar is one of the most remarkable places in Tartu. A great cellar built inside a hill, it actually used to hold gunpowder, and now the interior is kept very much in the same line. The food is excellent and represents the German part of Estonian kitchen. The place is also popular for drinking beer -- what is considered a "man's cup" holds a litre of special red house beer. In the evenings, the Cellar has live bands and dancing or karaoke, and it can be extremely crowded. Service is not so great, but the sight itself is worth one visit.
