Wow...Bad Service, Bad Food!

I used to frequent this place many years ago when I lived in Solvang. Its food was much much better back then. Although it's not a fancy restaurant, it is missing its spunk and fresh food flavor. I went again this week and was miffed when I had to request condiments twice, and the restaurant was NOT busy. We didn't wait too long for our food, but what got me was the fact that my eggs and country potatoes were cold! I don't mean warm, I mean cold like they had been pre-made ahead of time or sat for many minutes in a refrigerator. We only waited about 10 minutes for our food and I found this very mind boggling. They have hot lamps you can see in the kitchen, so how did my food get cold? My daughter had ableskeivers and they were very warm...go figure. My husbands omelet and potatoes were as cold as mine and the melted cheese was stiff not stringy. We won't go back again that's for sure. I do recommend Arnies next door to them. I have eaten there recently and it's as good as usual! And the food is HOT!

We stopped in at The Red Viking for breakfast one morning and it hit the spot. French toast, bacon and eggs, you name it--they have it. They also have a cool place mat that gives you the history of the area and the service was real friendly. It seemed like a place that locals frequented. Not for fussy eaters...a true diner-style experience.

The Red Viking

A bit over-the-top Danish in decor, but then again, so is most everything in this town! Cozy and busy, especially since it's on the main street. We had dinner here our first night. Didn't like it. Wouldn't go back.

I was adventurous and had Hokkebof (pronounced hockey-boof) - essentially Salisbury Steak mixed with onions, with an egg, sunny-side-up, on top. My wife had lemon-herb chicken. Neither were spectacular, although that's not the reason we wouldn't go back. It was more the service.

Maybe they were busy, so I'll give that as a caveat. The servers were indifferent - I had my hand raised for quite some time before I had to get up to get someone's attention (and we were sitting near the kitchen). They didn't bring us condiments, and we had to ask several times for them. Overall a lackluster performance.
