The Conservatory, Old Course Hotel

This is the more casual restaurant at the Old Course hotel, located on the ground floor off the lobby. It gets its name from the idea that many country houses in Great Britian had conservatories in them, which was a room to relax, read or eat in while still drawing in the beauty of the outdoors.

Casual attire is welcome due to many golfers taking their noon meal here.

The restaurant has a garden-room decor and is glassed in (shatter-proof), including a section of the roof. Warning - the restaurant is along side the 17th fairway and diners have had the frightening experience of having their lunch interrupted, startled by a the very loud thwack of a wayward golf ball hitting the glass!

Menu items include soups, salads, sandwiches and light entrees. Most feature Scottish dishes or light continential fare and all make use of local produce.

This is also where afternoon tea is served until 4pm. I ran in one day after shopping, missing tea, but was given a plate of homemade Scottish shortbread to take to my room at no charge! Best and butteriest shortbread I have ever eaten. If you can make time in your busy schedule for tea, the food and experience are well worth it.

A recent visit to the hotel's web site does not list this restaurant. Instead it lists Sands Seafood Bar and restaurant. Perhaps it had taken the place of the Conservatory. (Personally, I should hope not.) According to the web site, Sands offers contemporary cuisine with a fusion influence in a fresh, young atmosphere. The extensive, eclectic menu includes something for anyone who loves good food, highlighted by Sands' own signature gravadlax, a sushi/sashimi counter, a local seafood platter for two and a raw oyster bar.
