Although in recent years, McCalisters Delis are beginning to pop up as a small southern chain, they remain family owned and one of the first of their restaurants was here in Oxford. Set in a small builing that was once a gas station and another time posed as a 50s diner in a B movie called "The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag," McCalisters is a fabulous little gourment deli. Famous for their stuffed potatoes, the biggest among the big is the "Spud Max" with two whole potatoes shoved end to end to look like one enormous spud and then topped with bacon, cheese, veggies, etc.
If you can finish one of these monstrosities in a single sitting, you're doing better than most. Also known for their ice tea brewed from a southern family recipe with scoops of pure cane sugar, if you're an ice tea drinker chances are you'd be hard pressed to find a better glass. As they are a deli, you can also be sure that their sandwiches are fantastic. The McCalister Club and the Memphian would be my two recommendations but the decorated chalk boards that serve as their menus will point you to a collection of sandwiches that will make it a tough decision of which to try first. Of course being in a college town, the walls are decorated in hommage to Ole Miss, the local university so you can expect a younger college-esque environment here, but that shouldn't persuade you from bringing the family. Be warned that although a deli in name, in price you'll find that you're average meal will cost you about $10/person. All in all however, an excellent restaurant for a good meal and highly recommended!
