Kazbar was recommended to me by a good friend of mine - I was warned it can get pretty busy at the weekends - so I took my partner for dinner there last Thursday evening.

On opening the front door a guitar hanging from the ceiling shoots into the air, setting the mood for a weird and wonderful experience. We were greeted by a bearded barman who offered us a drink before sitting down to our table - and we accepted whole-heartedly! I had a glass of rioja (served in a little tumbler) and my partner went for one of their legendary mojitos, made with what seemed like a whole bush of fresh mint!

Our round morrocan table was lit by candlelight creating a warm romantic mood. The interior really is worth a look even if you don't have time to stay for food - beautiful archways, lanterns, a huge sunroof and tiled floors throughout. We ordered 3 tapas each which turned out to be more than enough - those little plates are deceptively filling! The bill came to around £38 for the two of us which included two cocktails and two glasses of wine which we found to be very reasonable.

I join my friend in thoroughly recommending the Kazbar. The ambiance was lovely, the staff were very friendly and despite not being quite as hip as the waitresses (!) we were well looked after. They also serve free tapas during the early evening with your first drink which we missed unfortunately. But we'll certainly be back!

Ah, the Kazbar, a place staffed by pretty people or people who are not pretty but cool. This is what my (delightful) companion told me--that photos were required on application. She is very pretty, and seemingly with each review I write, my fondness for her intensifies.

The inside of the building is very interesting, and there is an exciting tree with lights that reaches up into the roof. The roof is glass with Oxford sky outside. The staff boy (cool category) behind the bar forced upon us a bottle of Argentinean Chardonnay, which was drunk maybe too quickly. Then we went to a table in really nice surrounds with flickering candles and cushions, where we sat with a second bottle of the same and ordered pretty much the whole menu, including a clean sweep of the seafood section. The tapas were okay. Wrong choices may have been made, but I desired more bite, more meat, more chewing. The second bottle of wine caused some sort of void, which was entered and left, fortunately without harm. The Kazbar I recommend, but watch out for the void.

Kazbar was a fun place to hang out. It has several different rooms and is set up in Moroccan/Spanish style. You sit on cushions and, depending on your mood, sip on strong coffee, cocktails, or sangria. The tapas are good and great to share with friends. I always ate more than I thought I would. In the summer, the roof opens up, and you can see the sky change colors in the evening. Lots of students and young working people hang out here.
