Villa Sorriso

My roommates parents flew into town for the weekend before heading south to San Diego and were looking for a great restaurant to relax at and catch up with their daughter and get to know her friends. We took off down Colorado Street in hopes of finding something to delicious, but also some place that wasn't teaming with Star-bucks drinking, Pinkberry eating patrons. Which is difficult any time after 7pm when the streets fill with locals looking for a good time. In Pasadena there are plenty of places to eat along the trendy Colorado Street which also means hoards of people standing outside waiting to go in.

Near the end of Colorado, just before we reached no mans land and there was Villa Sorriso. It didn't have a long line so we had high hopes of getting seating quick. However parking was another issues. Not wanting to pay for valet parking we drove around for twenty minutes before something opened up on a side street near Forever 21. It was quite a long walk but we did a lot of window shopping along the way. When we arrived at Villa Sorriso there was small table outside with a menu. A quick look at revealed that they offered a nice variety of seafood and pasta. The hostess lead us through a small court yard with a small fountain and plenty of outdoor tables and seated us quickly.

Being in the mood for some pasta I quickly skipped the seafood and quickly found what I was looking for: chicken pesto fettucini ($13). My roommate settled for chicken fettucini Alfred ($12), and her parents got Grilled Wild King Salmon ($26) and Rosemary Chicken ($18). The menu did offer a very nice array of pasta, pizzas, appetizers, poultry, steaks, chops, salads, and seafood.

After ordering I got to take in some of the décor. It was done in a mediterranean style villa with a modern twist to it. Colors are mute, but pop and the flickering candle lie, low lighting, and soft music playing. The dining room was cozy and we had a great view of the street so we could do some people watching.

When our food came I couldn't wait to did in. My chicken was juicy and the pesto sauce was nice, but it was missing something; it was a little bland. The fettucini could have used some sundered tomatoes (I'm very particle to them in my pasta) and a little more life, but overall it was a very nice dinner. The waiter was very pleasant; coming by to check on us, but not being overbearing or invisible. Overall the atmosphere was wonderful and the food was okay. It was amazing, but good enough to make me want to come back and try something else.

I recently visited the restaurant and it’s the most horrible experience in my life. Although we had reservation both the table and food was an incredibly long wait. In addition they sat us in a completely different section than we had been promised to have when I made the reservations. They continued to forget our drinks and every time we reminded the staff they gave us a malicious response. Our waiter was more concerned with gossiping with his colleagues than assist our table. Towards the end of evening as it was getting chilly I asked the manager to turn on the heating lamp because the busboy turned it off while he was cleaning our table. He cruelly refused, began snapping his fingers and basically became violent with his foul language and demeanor. In an error in judgment, we decided to stay for the birthday girl. Since the restaurant turns into a club the staff began removing our chairs from the table before we finished our desserts and drinks. This is ultimately the worse experience ever!

Villa Sorriso

Cheerleaders of Pasadena will tell you that Pasadena itself is becoming a destination for folks from L.A. It's no longer a sleepy suburb, but a place that hipsters from L.A. actually seek out. If you want an example of this reverse migration to Pasadena, I offer you Villa Sorriso.

Villa Sorriso sits on a prime corner of Colorado Boulevard in Old Town. It's a small stucco bungalow that shouts Southern California. The moment you pull up, you are greeted by heartthrob valets just waiting to be discovered. The hostesses are all model material.

Your first view is the happening patio. A stylish water fountain makes noise and an old Italian movie is playing (with no sound). The crowd looks like a soap opera star convention. This is Hollywood, only it's Pasadena. This trendy spot can easily compete with West Hollywood or Soho.

We were officered a great table outside and then ordered fun martinis. (They have a ton of great ones). I ordered a Lobster Martini for my appetizer. Okay, so this one isn't a REAL martini, it's chunks of lobster meat with mango and paya aioli served in martini glass, and boy was it good! For the main course, I had Tuscan Chicken with artichokes, tomatoes, and asparagus, another hit. Others at the table had pasta and steaks while the kids both had pizzas. Everyone was pleased with what they had ordered.

The stunning hostess fell in love with Patrick and offered him a tour of The Zebra Lounge upstairs. We were not invited on the tour, but found out it's a private club (members only) where you can drink and eat from a special menu. They have computer workstations and big plasma TVs, while a monthly parking pass comes with the membership. It's very L.A. to be able to pay for special treatment. Patrick's report was that the Zebra Lounge is very cool.

We ended the meal with fresh, homemade gelato. This was one cool place and helped me realize that Pasadena is no longer the sleepy, bedroom community it once was if Villa Sorriso is any indicator. Pasadena is happening!
