The Melting Pot has become a well-known chain of restaurants offering fondue. Located near downtown, The Melting Pot offers a respite from tourist-oriented dining and a chance to try out the fondue style of cooking. Fondue, for the uninitiated, allows the diner to cook their own food at the table. The Melting Pot's menu features a large selection with the option to select individual components or a fondue combination. These combinations offer the best 'bang for the buck' as you get an appetizer, salad, and entree for two people.
I recommend the classic combination with a Swiss Fondue appetizer (with traditional cherry brandy - or kirschwasser), a selection of meats, chicken, and fish for the entree, and adding a chocolate fondue dessert. The cheese fondue is incredibly delicious and could be a meal unto itself. The salads are all top-notch and come with homemade dressings and a garlic and wine topping. With the entree and the vegetables, you get a massive offering of sauces for breading and dipping.
With all the food laid out before you, it is hard to save room for dessert - but you *must*! The chocolate is served melted (and can include a shot of liquor, nuts, or other additions) and you are provided fruits and cakes for dipping. Sinful!
The Melting Pot is a wonderful place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary and has staked a claim in the 'occassion' market. The interior is dimly lit, the booths are very private, and the service is always excellent. As a frequent diner, I cannot think of a restaurant that pays better attention to its guests. The wine list is also comprehensive and moderately priced. I would not, however, recommend The Melting Pot for children. The combination of boiling oil and a long dinner (I am usually there at least 90 minutes) can make for a stressful experience for families.
