The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant. My husband and I had no idea what to expect when we went there--we were dressed very casually, though the ambiance of the restaurant is somewhat formal and very romantic.

We ordered the special, "The Big Night Out," which included a cheese fondue (made at the table!) with bread chunks, green apples, and veggies. The next course was the salad--I had the California and my husband had the mushroom salad. I have to say that these were the best salads we have ever had!

Next was the main course. We chose which type of cooking "broth" to use, and they brought out a spread of chicken, steak, lobster, shrimp, and veggies, with about seven different dipping sauces. You then spear your food and cook it in the fondue pot for about 2 minutes. It was fun and very tasty!

Next was the dessert course--we had plain dark chocolate fondue (though there are several choices!) and, once again, they brought out an incredible spread of fruits, cheesecake, brownies, etc.

It was incredibly good food, and we walked away (waddled, more likely) more full than we had ever been!

This is a chain restaurant in an old house that specializes in fondue. They have a cheese appetizer course, a wide variety of entrees, and a terrific selection of chocolates. The meal will be long and leisurely as you cook at your own table. Outstanding house seasoning. The tables are very private and in some cases are in their own little rooms. The white chocolate dessert was our favorite. Very romantic.

The Melting Pot has become a well-known chain of restaurants offering fondue. Located near downtown, The Melting Pot offers a respite from tourist-oriented dining and a chance to try out the fondue style of cooking.

Fondue, for the uninitiated, allows the diner to cook their own food at the table. The Melting Pot's menu features a large selection with the option to select individual components or a fondue combination. These combinations offer the best 'bang for the buck' as you get an appetizer, salad, and entree for two people.

I recommend the classic combination with a Swiss Fondue appetizer (with traditional cherry brandy - or kirschwasser), a selection of meats, chicken, and fish for the entree, and adding a chocolate fondue dessert. The cheese fondue is incredibly delicious and could be a meal unto itself. The salads are all top-notch and come with homemade dressings and a garlic and wine topping. With the entree and the vegetables, you get a massive offering of sauces for breading and dipping.

With all the food laid out before you, it is hard to save room for dessert - but you *must*! The chocolate is served melted (and can include a shot of liquor, nuts, or other additions) and you are provided fruits and cakes for dipping. Sinful!

The Melting Pot is a wonderful place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary and has staked a claim in the 'occassion' market. The interior is dimly lit, the booths are very private, and the service is always excellent. As a frequent diner, I cannot think of a restaurant that pays better attention to its guests. The wine list is also comprehensive and moderately priced. I would not, however, recommend The Melting Pot for children. The combination of boiling oil and a long dinner (I am usually there at least 90 minutes) can make for a stressful experience for families.
