The food was not very good, though I did eat vegetarian food at a steak/seafood/fancy-dining restaurant. Vegetarians were more of an afterthought here. I met my friend Dave there to see a swing band. We had hoped some dancers would join us, but none did.
The band wasn’t very good, as they were too focused on dragging each song out so that several members could have solos in every song. But the best was yet to come. Towards the end of the band’s last set, the leader, Doc Jones, recognized some jazz performers in the audience. There was a big jazz and blues festival in Phoenix that weekend and several performers had come to Johnny’s Uptown for dinner.
I don’t remember all the performers, but they included the drummers from Son de Luna and several other amazing performers. Several went up and had a jam session with part of Doc Jones’ band. He gave up the piano to someone, the bass was grabbed by a guy, the guitar was grabbed, the drummer was replaced, and the drummers from Son de Luna got their drums from their vehicle. It was high energy and so freakin’ unbelievably good. Luck was on my side.
