Dining 1800s Style

  • October 29, 2008
  • Rated 5 of 5 by mikro from Liverpool, New York
Upon the recommendation, we made dinner reservations at the Dobbin House a week prior to our arrival in Gettysburg. On a busy night, we still had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated. Meanwhile, we sat on a bench outside under the full moon, visited the gift shop, and saw the underground railroad hiding spot in the tavern.
We dined by candlelight in one of the Alexander Dobbin dining rooms. The attentive waitress was dressed in costume from the Colonial days. The menu was printed in Old English and featured dishes of the period. An assortment of fresh baked colonial breads started our meal. We dined on "flesh" (pork tenderloin) and fish (orange roughy), accompanied by a baked sweet potato with cinnamon and brown sugar - delicious. Warm apple cider with apple jack brandy and hearty dessert rounded out the meal.

Dobbin House Tavern

I really enjoyed dining at the Spring House Tavern. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, great for a casual lunch and quick beer. The historic Dobbin House is a great place for dinner. The fine food and dining was a great experience. I would highly recommend the more casual/laid-back Spring House Tavern or more upscale Dobbin House.

Dobbin House has two restaurants - upstairs is the fine dining, and downstairs is the casual tavern. The atmosphere downstairs is unbeatable - in the basement of this Civil War house, there are natural springs, captured when the house was built, still in operation.

Servers are dressed in period costume, and tables are set with tapered candles - when one burns to the end, it is immediately replaced with a fresh one. Candles seem to be the only lighting, making it dark and very cozy and inviting. Food consists of sandwiches and light meals - they also have a daily chef's special.
