It was our first night in Antigua. We were freezing and hungry. We were staying in the Santa Clara hotel and wanted to eat nearby. Steak House Antigua was just a few blocks away, and there were good smells emanating from it. That was enough for us.
We walked in the door and immediately felt warm. The air was warm, the colors were warm, and the hostess greeted us warmly. We were seated in a corner, next to the coffee bin. Boy, did that smell good. It was Isabel brand. We never tried it during our trip but judging solely by the aroma, it must taste good.
The restaurant is small, with a cute little bar in back. The furnishings are of dark wood, and the walls are a mellow tone. The tables are dressed with hunter-green cloths, and there are a few paintings hanging on the wall. It is welcoming and, once again, warm.
The hostess (owner?) chatted with us for a while. She seemed eager to be the first to tell us of her beautiful city. She gave us suggestions on where to go, what to see, and even where else to eat.
Surprisingly, the menu was wide-ranging. It being a steak house, I had expected, well, mostly steaks. The list starts with the complete meal specials. There are six entrees to choose from, two of which are vegetarian and accompanied by soup, garlic bread, and a non-alcoholic drink for Q36. There is an assortment of appetizers offered, various queso fundidos, salads, soups, pastas (mix and match shape and sauce), plenty of steaks and grilled meats from which to choose, many fish and shrimp dishes, sandwiches, and burgers.
We started dinner with a queso fundido con cebolla y pimiento: melted cheese with onions and pimentos. It was fantastic, but it was served with breadsticks. We were expecting tortillas. The breadsticks made scooping up the cheese difficult, but it sure did taste good. I then followed with an avocado salad, which was huge. It was four avocado halves garnished with lettuce, tomato, and onions and covered with a tasty vinaigrette. I loved it. Next was the main course, and I was already full. I had the Plato Chapin, which was a New York steak served with beans, bananas, rice, guacamole, and cheese. Libby had the Punta de Puyaso, New York steak. A baked potato, corn on the cob, grilled green onions, and garlic bread accompanied it. Wow! Everything was wonderful. Libby then ordered the fried bananas for dessert. They were served with cream and honey. Of course, I made space to help. They, too, were great. Warm and full, we waddled home.
Steak House Antigua is located one block south of the central park. It is open from noon to 9:30pm daily.
