Extremely Disappointed

My family and I had reservations to have lunch with our dog here. We were extremely disappointed when they told us they were not seating outside on a beautiful sunny day. When I asked about my dog I was told "just tie him to a tree" I was uncomfortable doing so and decided not to have lunch there. The hostess and manager were dismissive and rude, the manager even had a few rude comments to add!

You come upon the Jordan Pond House as you exit Acadia National Park. It's a very popular place and is well known throughout the area for its popovers. In the summer, they have tea on the lawn that borders the pond -- a lovely location. We tend to visit a little too early in the season for that, but we usually stop in and have some chowder and popovers. The restaurant interior is very open -- large windows looking out toward the lawn area, with a beautiful view of the pond and The Bubbles (two mountains) behind it.

The seafood chowder is superb -- very creamy and delicious. The popovers come with jam, so you can enjoy one with your meal and pretty much have the other with jam as a dessert!

Attached to the restaurant is a good size gift shop that sells items by Maine artisans, popover mix, candles, and more.

Excellent for afternoon tea, which can be taken inside or out. An alternative to scones are popovers (like a Yorkshire pudding, but lighter) -- great with strawberry jam. Great lemonade.

The Jordan Pond House

The House Along the Pond
The Jordan Pond House dates all the way back to 1847! The house was originally owned by the Jordan Family of Seal Harbor for whom the House and The Pond are named after. The house was founded as a restaurant in the early 1870's. However, in 1979 the original pond house was destroyed and then, rebuilt. The pond house has a history of many owners starting with the Jordan Family and ending with the Acadia Corporation and a small group of locals.

Believable Prices for Unbelievable Meals
With the highest single entree being exactly $20, it is almost as if you are stealing from them. The food we've eaten was extremely delicious (Popover a la Mode). Did you know, The Jordan Pond house serves Over +2000 Popovers each afternoon?! If you can't tell by now, The Jordan Pond House is known for its "Popovers", which are a light, fluffy, hollow pastry which is made from scratch in the house kitchen. The popovers can come with almost every meal, which, I think, makes everyone very pleased, although, the popovers can be a meal in themselves! Out of everything I have tried there, there are three that you have to try. They are the Cappuccino and Popovers, Popover a la Mode, and The Double Rich Brownie a la Mode with a popover. So write those down on a piece of paper and don't forget! Trust me on this one, I've tasted tons of desserts and cappuccinos and I've never tasted anything better, and if your worried about the calories, just ride bike down to the pond house, eat, and then ride back!

A very interesting place to visit, as well as to eat, was the Jordan Pond House. If you take the Park Loop Road on its circuitous route through Acadia National Park, you will pass right by it. Do stop! We were there for lunch, and did find the prices rather high, but they have a wonderful tradition of tea, and popovers with homemade strawberry jam. I had a luncheon salad also. Absolutely delicious! You have a good choice of food, ranging from their lunch menu, which ranges from homemade soups and salads, to entrees including seafood, chicken, and pasta dishes. As I mentioned, the afternoon tea menu is a wonderful snack item for one and all. There is also a nice assortment of dessert choices, including homemade icecream, brownies, blueberry crisp, and of course, popover ala mode. The grounds around the restaurant are very well kept and the gardens tended. The scenery of the "Bubble" mountains just added to the feeling of contentment while wandering around outside before or after lunch. RE: the popovers - I never had them, or have seen them, before, but they reminded me of a very light, fluffy pastry that you break open by hand. The strawberry jam just added the crowning touch. Since then, I have discovered the website and that I can order these through their mail-order department. The lunch was just enough for my taste and pocketbook. Dinners tend to be a little expensive, but I guess when you consider where you are, it's probably no more expensive than any other place that has a corner on the market. Try lunch! Then you can spend the remaining hours stopping at all the scenic pull-offs on the Park Loop Road to enjoy the thrill of nature.
