Weeping Radish Brewery & Restaurant

I ate at the Weeping Radish Brewery & Restaurant on Roanoke Island because the German in me couldn't pass it up.

This is really not a good place to eat. I had the Sauerbraten, and it was way too sour. Trust me, I've had good Sauerbraten, and this wasn't it, although I will say that their beer was very tasty. If you're interested in sampling some fine beer, then I suggest visiting their pub.

If you like root beer, this is the place to go. We ate here for lunch, and we were not disappointed. It was great. They brew their own root beer, which was very good. It had a smooth, mild flavor and less of a bite than the root beer you buy at the store. The food is Bavarian all the way, and don't worry if you don't like meats ending in "wurst"--they have an ample selection to please even picky eaters. We had grilled reubens, and they were perfect. The corned beef was nice and lean, and they put their homemade sauerkraut on the top. Their fries were waffle fries and were fresh-cut. The atmosphere was fun and distinctly Bavarian. Our waiter was also Bavarian, and he was friendly and helpful when it came to describing what was on the menu. Best of all, the price was friendly. Go here even if you aren't an adventurous eater, and I am sure you will find something you like.

Also, you must go to the Christmas store across the court. We had to drag ourselves out of the store eventually, or we could have spent all day just looking at all the interesting stuff. They had a candy section inside with all old-fashioned candy. We had fun snacking on our choices the rest of the week.

The food was delicious. I had bauerwurst and knockwurst with spaetzels and gravy served with a soft pretzel ($9.99). My husband had small pieces of bratwurst and sauerkraut wrapped in a flaky pastry ($6.95). They brew their own beers, which my husband enjoyed. The hot apple strudel with whipped cream ($3.75) was wonderful. You feel like you are in a German beer hall. The waitress was friendly and efficient. You can buy beer to take home if you wish.

The name alone was enough to attract us to this restaurant. But being of German extraction, it lured us with the smell of pork roast and sauerkraut and good German beer. Staff was very friendly. Length of time to wait for the food was rather long, our first visit, but the wait was worth it. There are two restaurants of the same name - one in Manteo and the other in Kitty Hawk. We tried them both. Same menu, of course, but I enjoyed the dinner menu more because of the larger selections of platters - not just your sausage meals. But I do love their wurst. Of course the German beers are not to be missed, from dark to light. They have a small gift shop for souvenirs, such as beer glasses with the Weeping Radish emblem, steins, t-shirts, even beer to take out or send. If you enjoy this kind of food, don't miss it.

Ah, you want to guzzle down a few icy beers in the great outdoors, but you and your honey have those kids to deal with, don't you. Well, then come to the Weeping Radish in Manteo. From Nags Head, it's a five minute drive, and the best part about it is that it's a brew pub with several great beers AND A CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND!! That's right, you can sit outside swilling down cold ones and watching your children amuse themselves on a playground within view.

The food there is quite tasty--sort of a Bavarian theme with a variety of sausages and other easy to like fare, such as our favorite appetizer: warm, soft pretzels with mustard. Surprisingly, this branch of Weeping Radish (there are others in the nearby vicinity) does not get a lot of business in early June, so we felt as though we had the outdoor seating area pretty much to ourselves. And, it was a nice, shaded area perfect for taking a break from the hot sunny beach.
