Great Location, But Not the Best Chips and Salsa

Great Location, But Not the Best Chips and Salsa

La Margarita is located towards the center of one side of the downtown historic Market Square . It is a place where location is everything if you want a good meal outside and spend a while watching people pass by. The location and lively surroundings do have a great feel of sitting somewhere in Mexico in a Plaza Mayor.
La Margarita made its mark and is known for its sizzling fajitas and some of the hands down best margaritas that you might ever encounter. But the real secret on the menu is the Pollo Mole – which is a chicken breast perfectly cooked and so juicy you can shred it with a fork. The Mole sauce was perfect as well – and its hard to believe that you can get something like that so right – and yet get the basics wrong.
The beans that accompanied it were too salty to eat. The rice was hard and dry and was not worthy enough to be on the same plate as the Mole! But the worst part – the chips did not taste good – and the salsa really could not cover up the bad taste of the chips!
So if you are going to La Margarita – go for the fajitas and the drinks and definitely order the Mole – but . pass on the sides and the chips. There is often a long line – and if you encounter that – and want more for your meal, better to go on to another place.

I have been to this restaurant before and always look forward to dining there when I am in San Antonio. This is as authentic as you get if you are looking for great Mexican food. The service is great, the food is always wonderful, and the atmosphere puts you in another country.

I definitely give this place A on location and atmosphere, as you feel as if you are in Guadalajara, so it feels very authentic, and I would say the food is fairly authentic.

The salsa was okay, and I am a big salsa fan, so that didn’t wow me. Other than that, my enchiladas were great, and my wife's fajitas were above average. In general, that whole "market place" is a neat area and worth going to. We took a street car to get there. You will spot it quickly, or probably hear mariachis doing their thing!

This place is not called La Margarita by accident. They make every margarita from scratch, and they are the best I have ever had. Each time I come to San Antonio, I make a point to eat here, even if I am not staying downtown. From the Riverwalk hotels, you can take a trolley to the Mexican Market where La Margarita is located. If you actually get around to eating, the fajitas are excellent and usually have enough for two people to share (with leftovers). There is also a roving mariachi band that will play for a small fee. This charge can be added to your bill. If you park behind the restaurant in the La Margarita parking lot, you can have your parking ticket stub validated before leaving the restaurant. This will save about $5 in parking fees. The parking lot is on Dolorosa Street.
