Dunn's Deli outDoes Schwartz's

Everyone knows Montreal is famous for smoked meat. Most of the tourist traffic queues outside Schwartz's deli on Rue. St. Laurent, streaming in and out, sharing tables and being served by abrupt waiters. Well, some of the Montreal natives actually prefer other delis to get their "fix" and Dunn's Famous on Metcalfe street is one of the best! A friend of mine who lived here for three years insisted we should go here rather than "that other place". She always felt that Schwartz's wasn't as clean nor was the staff very friendly. It's crowded full of tourists. Fair enough, I'll go where the good stuff is and we all met up and went to Dunn's instead.

keeping in mind it's November and mid-afternoon so we were past the lunch rush and the tourist season. The Menu has lots on it besides smoked meat if that's not your t hing. My friend had a chopped liver sandwich that she said was to die for. The staff here was really nice and made suggestions. They ask how you want your meat... you can get it full fat, fully lean or somewhere in between. We had the medium-lean cut and it was perfect. Smoked meat is sort of like pastrami but a bit spicier and it's always served on freshly baked rye bread with a side of cole slaw and a dill pickle. They have yummy desserts, too.

Dunn's has been in business since 1927 and is open 24 hours and is right around the corner from the tourist information centre and steps from St. Catherine Street. There are a few other locations around the city as well. For Accessibility: There is a step or two to get in and the washrooms are down a flight of stairs.

Dunns Famous Steakhouse Delicatessen

Dunns Famous Steakhouse Delicatessen, established in 1927, expanded greatly and then collapsed but is now back again. Their smoked meat is good, but prices are a little higher than Ben's. Service is good, and soda is a decent size and includes a refill, unlike Ben's. There are refills for coffee.

I wouldn't recommend their poutine with smoked meat, as the gravy and cheese flavors mixed in with the smoked meat are very filling. Nor would I recommend their super sandwich, with a large amount of French fries, coleslaw, and pickle; it's just too much food. Go for the small-size sandwich and share an order of poutine. It is fully licensed and open 24 hours.
