Description: I have lived in New Mexico for 20 years and 15 in Arizona, so I’m a bit of a Mexican food snob. THIS place is wonderful! Not your ‘typical’ tacos and burritos, but authentic food from Mexico.
Homemade salsas and tortillas, unique cocktails and complex and interesting ingredients make for a taste explosion!
Patricia Cabrera is the owner/chef here and she imports many of her spices from Central and Southern Mexico. There is also a lot of her artwork, as well as others, all over the building.
Like I said, not your ‘typical’ tacos and burritos, this place offers dishes such as, Cochinita Pibil, which is a Yucatecan pork dish cooked in banana leaves and achiote sauce, garnished with orange slices and red onions, served with refried black beans topped with cotija cheese. Say THAT 5 times fast!
Or try the Empanada de Pescado which is a large corn tortilla filled with red snapper (marinated in herbs and garlic), sauteéd onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños, pan fried & garnished with avocado, served with watercress salad and white rice.
WOW! The food here is impeccably put together and tasty.
You can still get a taco or two, or better yet, try one of South Americas great treats, a Torta. It’s basically a Mexican sub. Sandwiches made with meat of your choice, beans, cabbage, tomato, onion, pickled jalapeños, and sour cream on a telera bread. REALLY tasty,
If you’re into a liquid dinner, try one of the unique cocktails like, The Spicy Vampiro, tequila, homemade spicy sangrita and lime juice. Or a Chaay Can (greensnake), with gin, avocado, mint, lime juice, and ice with sugar rim.
I have eaten here on a couple of occasions. I really enjoy not only the food, but the atmosphere and all the skeleton and skull artwork. There’s a nice, big patio out back that hosts a huge handpainted mural on a side wall. Perfect for a warm summer evening.
On this visit, I had the steak torta and my friend who is a vegetarian had something called, Morisqueta, which white rice over black beans, topped with mild tomato salsa, pickled jalapeños, and cotija cheese. Both dishes were tasty and you have homemade salsas to add to your dish it you so please.
We also had as an appetizer, a guacamole of sorts. It was actually sliced avocado, with lime and jalapenos. It was served with corn tortillas and it was WONDERFUL. It’s not on the regular menu, it was a special for the night.
Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong here. There are vegetarian items as well, so don’t be shy if you don’t fancy meat. They have Happy Hour from 8 to close and they are only open for dinner at 530pm, everyday.
