My three friends and I were dismissed by the host when we went to Sushi Leblon. The restaurant was recommended by our hotel. We were looking for a new place to dine because this was our 6th trip to Rio de Janeiro. Upon arrival at the restaurant we were offered a table for 3 (by the door I might add) even though we asked for a table for 4 - it was clear there were 4 of us as we were all standing there. When we walked out (the host was outside) and noted the table was too small we were ignored and dismissed. We kindly walked away and had dinner down the block at a Thai restaurant (Nam Thai) where we were allowed to choose our table. Upon our return to our hotel we noted our experience to the concierge who promptly called the restaurant to tell of our terrible experience. I cannot recommend Sushi Leblon I can recommend the Orla Copacabana Hotel and Nam Thai.

This restaurant is not the only sushi place in Rio. However, it was recommended by at least five different people before we even got to our hotel. My wife and I eat sushi weekly and can compare it to similar places in Tokyo, Kyoto, San Francisco, Miami, London, and NYC. The wait can be daunting if you don't have reservations. We came at 11pm on a Wednesday night, and there was a line of cariocas out the door. We were fortunate enough to get a seat at the impressive wrap-around bar after only a few minutes of waiting. The Japanese/Portuguese menu could be a bit challenging for the occasional fan, but everything is pretty good. This is were the sharply dressed sons and daughters of Rio's elite and young entertainment types come to feast on signature hand rolls and chilled sake. Don't be intimidated, though; if you like sushi, this is your spot in Rio. It is also in a very safe neighborhood (Leblon), a short walk from our hotel, the Marina All Suites.
