I have eaten there once before in 2002 and should not have gone back. The food was good, as was the beer, but they did the Hungarian trick of ripping us off when it came to wine - it was over £2 for a glass of wine. Purely for this I would not recommend them... or perhaps go there and just stick to beer, but remember the comments of the reviewers!!

This is a small, cosy restaurant that seemed to be popular with the locals and families, just off Dozsa Ter, Buda (near the tunnel under the castle). The relaxed atmosphere was helped by the friendliness of the waiter who spoke to me in German throughout the meal (I seemed to get mistaken for German nearly everywhere I went!).

The food was excellent--for starters, I had a cream of garlic soup, which had the largest cheesy crouton I have ever seen and was absolutely gorgeous. My partner had her first "gulyas" (goulash) experience here, which was also excellent.

For the main course, I had pork Bakony-style with noodle dumplings (strange, thin noodles made of dumplings that I became more accustomed to over the trip). The pork was in a really good, creamy paprika sauce, whereas my partner's choice of sesame-seed chicken with rice and ham was very dry. A lot of Hungarian food we found to be very dry, so this was not a reflection on that particular restaurant, just a matter of personal taste.

The only criticism I could make was that when we asked for wine, we were brought a relatively expensive sauvignon at 1,800 FTS, compared to the local Tokaj at 900 FTS a bottle. This could have, of course, been that he realised my Hungarian was on the poor side of non-existent, so he brought us a typical tourist wine rather than attempt to ask. Make sure you specify exactly what wine you require! The total of the meal came to around 6300 FTS. Check the bill though, as we were not sure if this included tips, since there seemed to be an extra item on the bill. After our earlier episode at the hotel, though, we ended up tipping on top anyway!

We walked down the steps from Fisherman’s Bastion to this cozy little family-run restaurant, which is also a short walk from Buda Tunnel. We settled into a pleather banquet and were presented with an extensive menu that included such Hungarian specialties as beef medallions, roast pork, five different chicken entrees, and a "special meat hotpot." I chose turkey medallions Szob> style (smothered with cheese) served with boiled potatoes and delicious rice. My husband went crazy for his appetizer of deep-fried Camembert cheese rolled in slivered almonds served with a side of blueberry sauce. He also enjoyed his goulash, which was also served with the house potatoes and rice. The servings were huge and freshly cooked to order. Horvath serves Gosser beer, which pleased my beer-loving husband. The pretty wooden bar was stocked with all of the requisite Hungarian liquors. The friendly staff appeared to all be related to one another, and the chef and waitress’ children played quietly in a banquet across the restaurant from us. The bar seemed to attract a familiar local crowd.

The total bill for two entrees, one appetizer, two beers and a mineral water came to a reasonable 5200 ft. While not a fancy or luxurious place, Horvath serves hearty food in a happy, comfortable family atmosphere.
