Mel's Diner

When you step inside this gleaming silver restaurant with its throwback to the 50’s, you will feel like you have stepped onto the set of Happy Days. The decor here is typical of places that hearken to a simpler time. Liberal use of neon and vintage advertising with the main focus on the large jukebox at the back are found throughout the diner. Which still belts out tunes from classic 50’s groups as The Beach Boys, The 4 Tops, and the Temptations. Mel’s plays the tunes and serves the food that has held up to the passage of time.

They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Emphases here are on classic comfort food with offerings of soups, salads, classic comfort food mainstays, and sandwich and burgers. Of course this being a 50’s dinner you have your share of malts, sundaes, shakes, and home made dessert. Classic appetizers such as Joanies chips and salsa, potsy’s potatoes skins, and fonzarelli cheese sticks plus the poodle skirt waitresses leave little doubt as to what to expect here.

After perusing the menu John and I decided to stick with the tried and true burger offerings. These are listed under Jukebox Heroes, which that title to me harkens to my time with Foreigner. I went with the Little Deuce Coupe Cajun Burger (after all I am a Beach Boys fan) and John went with the Marilyn Mushroom Burger. All burgers are 1/2 pound of fresh prime sirloin served with lettuce, onions, pickles, and tomatoes. Side offerings of chips, fries, pasta salad, or onion rings for an extra charge round out the meal. Though our tummies were almost at full we managed to squeeze in a strawberry short cake and hot fudge cake and just spilt them.

The food here is delish and tummy filling. The wait staff not only looks adorable but takes very good care of you. We walked away happy and very full. They do offer a child’s menu. To see their full menu and hours go to www.thesmokeymountainsparkway.com.

Eating at Mel's is like stepping back 50 years. From the old posters and ads covering the walls, to the authentic looking jukebox that really plays CDs, to the checkerboard tiles on the floor, to the vinyl covered seats in the booths.

The food is good and served in plentiful amounts. We were there for lunch and chose from the available sandwiches. Our picks were fried bologna, patty melt, rueben, and hot dog. All were served with a choice of chips, fries, or pasta salad. We all chose fries, which are very fresh, fried to perfection, and served in huge quantity. Not the most unique menu around, but exactly what one would expect in a diner like this. Good diner food served in generous amounts by next-door-neighbor friendly waitresses.

Mel's Diner

Just what it sounds like -- an American diner, with a stainless steel exterior, with a menu that includes burgers, burger baskets, dogs, etc. The juke box has fifties music on it, and the walls have decorations on them that date back to the '50s -- an example is framed front covers of magazines such as "Look" and "Life".

A few of the selections from their menu:

Beach Boy Baskets
Regular Baskets are served with chips; Deluxe Baskets are served with fries and slaw. Old Fashion Burger Basket Reg $ 3.95 Deluxe $ 4.95 Chili Cheeseburger Reg $ 3.75 Deluxe $ 4.75 Hamburger Basket Reg $ 3.25 Deluxe $ 4.25 BBQ Sandwich Basket Reg $ 4.50 Deluxe $ 5.50 Fish Sandwich Basket Reg $ 3.95 Deluxe $ 4.95 The Platters
Served with mashed potatoes or fries and a tossed salad and bread. Pork Chop $ 8.95 Grilled Chicken $ 8.95 Open Faced Roast Beef $ 8.95 Country Style Steak $ 6.95 Meatloaf $ 6.95 The Temptations Banana Split $ 3.95 Hot Fudge Sundae $ 2.95

This is located on West Wears Valley Road, a block off the Parkway -- turn west off the Parkway at traffic light #3. The Parkway is the main street through Pigeon Forge, six lanes wide except where there are also turning lanes, and the traffic lights have numbers on them. Many businesses use the traffic light numbers to tell potential customers where they are located.
