Madiba I-Shebeen

We worked all day long. When finished, that night, we decided between this place and a French restaurant located a block away. It came down to two against one vote so we ended up here. I didn’t regret it at all.

The food was excellent as was the service. The decor and ambiance fit perfectly the food served and none of us could skip the dessert.

But let’s begin with the main course… I had ostrich in a sweet sauce and just could not stop eating until the plate was completely clean. My brother had lentils to start and then a plate with meat that simply looked delicious. We both had African beer and my sister-in-law had a vegetarian plate that was too much of a temptation for us both to avoid tasting it.

Dessert was a creamy chocolate mousse we all decided upon since it looked gorgeous and the waitress so very recommended it. None could resist. If you are around, decide like us on South African over French food, which you can find around easier than Madiba´s...

This charming South African restaurant, in the heart of Fort Greene's restaurant row, has become one of the most popular neighborhood hangouts. Boasting a colorful and eclectic array of African and unclassified decorations, such as the ingenious chandelier made of recycled Coke bottles, this restaurant/bar has an incredibly friendly and accommodating staff and great upbeat music. As for food, it's an entirely interesting experience that will take you down the adventurous road of sampling pickled mangos, ostrich carpaccio, bunny chow (a vegetable/chicken/mutton curried stew served in a dugout loaf of bread), and a plethora of other traditional South African dishes. Make sure to save space for a dessert – their Nana's milk tart or malva pudding will be a perfect finale to a memorable night at Madiba.
