La Fermette Marbeuf

After I had made the mistake of eating a bland meal in a tourist district, La Fermette Marbeuf was suggested to me by the French concierge at my friend's hotel. As soon as my group walked into the beautiful restaurant with its green and white ceiling, stained glass accents, mirrored walls and intimate rooms, we felt like this is Paris. My wife would have loved the sunflowers used in the motif. The cream colored table cloths, the dim lighting, all lent a romantic, indulgent feel to the place. The service and menu proved not to disappoint either.

We were happy to find our personable waiter was fluent in English and worthy of any fine dining experience in the States. He answered all our questions about the dishes on the traditional French menu. I ended up ordering a puffed pastry with vegetables, steak with bernaise sauce on the side, and carmelized custard for dessert.

My first course was outstanding, but I have to say that even though I could cut it with a butter knife, the steak was just all right. To be fair, I learned the French tend to serve a different cut than Americans are used to eating. I was also surprised in the formal setting to get giant (but delicious) steak fries as a side dish. While we were eating, my friend gave me a crash course in Culinary Culture 101. He explained steaks are often served with mustard in France, and I would have to say that the bernaise sauce was an interesting twist for me. Even understanding the different expectations in Paris, I would probably not order a steak again, but the sea bass entree my friend ordered was absolutely perfect. The creme brulee type dessert was also sinfully delicious. I was already quite full when served my very generous helping in dishware as big as a cereal bowl. Yet I couldn't help myself. I devoured every last bite of the sweet stuff in front of me.

After all was said and done, my dinner alone was about 70 Euros. Of course, I tipped like an American, so that added a bit. I also drank wine like I was French. (My set menu cost was only 30 Euro.)

Was it worth it? Even with my less-than-perfect steak, I think so. The atmosphere was wonderful. The restaurant has been around for years, and that always means something good to me. La Fermette Marbeuf has a good reputation with both locals and tourists. I would highly suggest it to you.
