Good showmanship, substandard and overpriced food

When we arrived, the restaurant seemed full of character and we were amused by Gerard's efforts to tell us the history of the restaurant and show us his homemade wines of orange and walnut. His vin de noix was indeed delicious but the quality of the evening's offering quickly went down hill. First problem was that our wine was off - and we were cold shouldered after we pointed this out. Second was that our foie gras aux myrtilles was far too meagre for the massive 17.50 euros we each paid - two slices, each at about 2mm thick. The evening disintegrated when our main arrived. I had ordered the veal fillet while my partner had ordered the duck a l'orange. We had been assured by Gerard that the duck was 'magnifique' and the best thing on the menu but, apart from a candle in a piece of orange peel, tasting the orange in the dish was impossible - it was simply roasted duck. My veal was overcooked and, like the starter, extremely small. Moreover, the two mains differed massively in price - 9 euros between them - but they came with exactly the same accompaniments: potato dauphinoise and vegetable stack ( which were burnt in both cases). We were both very disappointed and the disappointment was made worse by the fact that it was a very expensive restaurant: we were paying a lot of money for substandard food. The entertaining banter of Gerard which we had enjoyed at the beginning at the meal became an irritant. When we confronted him about the low standards and the high prices, he denied it and, with terrible customer service attempted to walk away before being called back. In the end, he exclaimed - 'faites que vous voulez' - do what you want -which we did, and left him 80 euros instead of 107 which, rather revealingly, he accepted without fuss, probably hoping that the rest of the restaurant wouldn't catch on and revolt as well. In all, a wonderful show but if you want good quality cooking for your money, avoid les deux canards. Close
