A la Biche au Bois

MAY 2003:
The owners, Bertrand and Céline, are gracious hosts and English speakers. Advance reservations are a must. We had our group dinner at A la Biche au Bois last evening...it was terrific; food was super, the owners took very good care of us. I invited two local friends so there was lots of good conversation among the freely flowing wine. It's a good thing we're all walking!
We wanted a group photo taken but the restaurant staff was very busy, every seat was taken. The man at the next table offered to take it. To return the favor I took a photo of him and his date. [Note: This dinner, four courses (appetizer, main course, cheese, dessert), cost 39 euros total per person including all the house wine we could drink. At that time, the euro was $1.13. It was pre-arranged by email.]
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2004:
A la Biche au Bois, means the Doe in the Woods. They specialize in serving wild game. It was fun greeting the owners, Bertrand and Céline, with handshakes and hugs. Susanne ordered a terrine for starters and veal scaloppini for main course. She had wild duck last year but it was a bit tough, reflecting life in the wild, I suppose.
I had a salad with a small terrine and for the main course, deer stew. The stew came in a big pot with nearly fist-sized chunks of meat covered in rich gravy...fabulous.
Then came the cheese course; a tray of a dozen or so kinds of French cheeses. All you do is point to the type and ask the waiter to adjust the portion size by the knife angle...as many as you want and all you can eat if you still have room. For dessert Susanne had her favorite, crème brulee, and loved it. I had chocolat Liegeois...a hot fudge sundae with dark chocolate ice cream...a chocoholic's dream.
We each had a prix-fixe four-course meal, a half bottle of the house wine for the two of us (a '99 Bordeaux), and I had tea, all for the equivalent of $75; tax, small extra tip and lousy exchange rate (€ = US$1.23)included.
UPDATE MAY 2006:
We return for another wonderful meal. This time it's beef in an apple creme sauce (the apple taste is nearly gone but the welcome sweetness remains). Also coq au vin served in a pot with in a rich, thick sauce. The flavor is deep and subtle. Don't forget to dig for the last few pieces stuck to the bottom...that's where the flavor is! The appetisers, cheese and desserts were all terrific as usual. This place never disappoints. With a bottle of house wine, it came to US$85.00 at € = US$1.27
