The Stockpot

If you are looking for glamour, romance, or gourmet dining then don’t even bother reading this review. If, however, you want a quintessentially British meal at a bargain price then you may have found your new favorite restaurant. With locations all over London, the one we went to on this trip is just one that happened to be around the corner from the theater we were attending.

The decor is simple, wooden tables and there are prints of costumed British gentlemen. Tables are set rather close so seating is tight, but we managed quite well to have four of us eat on our small table.

The menus are printed daily to allow for the special of the day. When we were there, Wednesday January 11, 2006, the set menu for 5.10 pds was leek and potato soup and for the main course sausages, baked beans, Yorkshire pudding and mashed potatoes, quite a spread for under $10 even with the present exchange rate.

I started with the coriander and parsnip soup and for my main course I had a piece of Brie with crackers. It was perfect, just a light meal and exactly what I expected, creamy soup with the delightful twist of coriander and a nice size piece of Brie and three large crackers. I ordered French bread and butter as a side to eat with my Brie. My meal was about $6 not counting my Heineken.

Joe ordered the homemade pate and the roast beef. Al had the leek and potato soup and roast beef, and Bob did as well. The pate was a nice little square with four triangles of toast and some sliced cucumbers and lettuce.
The roast beef plates came with a large Yorkshire pudding, a generous serving of roasted potatoes, cabbage and carrots. It covered the plate and was all buried under gravy. It was hardy and filling fare and the roast beef though well cooked was tender and no one was complaining.

It was a very satisfactory meal at a fabulously cheap price. We could have easily spent twice or three times the amount at any other restaurant in the area and not have left any more satisfied.

Wine and beer is offered.

Here are a few of the things we didn’t try.

Starters: fried mushrooms and tartare sauce, garlic bread, tuna fish and bean salad and smoked salmon and avocado.

Pasta: Spaghetti vongole and penne with asparagus and mushrooms.

Dishes of the day: Fried liver with onions and sage and mashed potatoes; vegetarian cannelloni; Mexican pork stew;
gammon steak and pineapple; grilled lamb cutlets. The most expensive was $6.20.

Fish: grilled salmon steak; fried scampi and tartare sauce.

Omelets and salads.

Desserts jello and cream, apple crumble and custard, maple syrup pancakes.

You really can’t miss eating here. They, however, do not accept anything but cash, so be prepared, no travelers checks either.

A very good find, perfectly situated in Leicester Square. The Stockpot has a nightly set price menu for around $10USD for three courses. The set menu choices are limited, but always tasty.

Recent choices were beef bourguignon or coq a vin. Appetizer choices included a tasty pasta and asparagus salad or tomato, basil and mozzarella salad. If nothing on the set menu pleases you, the regular menu has a variety of choices, from pizzas to shepherds pie to salads.

The place is always crowded, but turnover seems quick and the service is friendly. It's a great place to go before the theater.

The Stockpot is a no frills chain of cheap eateries that are well worth visting. You can get tasty, wholesome food at prices that are exceptionally low for Central London. There are dishes such as lasagne and pizza that will only cost you around US$3 and roast beef and veg and steak and mushroom pie and potatoes that will only set you back about US$44.50.
