Red Cabbage (El Repollo Rojo)

This restaurant is truly a great find. If you are looking for chimichangas, taquitos, etc., keep looking. This is authentic cooking that integrates Mexico's rich history with food that is absolutely the best. The owner, Lola Bravo, has created a wonderful mixture of modern design, movie memorabilia, and a sort of shrine to Frida Kahlo that gives diners an experience they can get no place else.

The ingredients are fresh daily, sought out at local markets. Ms. Bravo has a personal connection that is clear to see with those she buys from, and she clearly gets the best. From Mole Poblano, to Chile Relleno, the food is flavorful, presented beautifully, all with wonderful service.

If you go to Puerto Vallarta, you owe it to yourself to go and spend a wonderful evening of food and conversation. As Ms Bravo says, "¡Provecho!"

This is an old Mexican family-run location (Hi to Lola Bravo and Cuco!), very small and intimate and very down-home. Its menu features old recipe dishes and indigenous sauces that are not offered often elsewhere. Ask about the cookbook. The special unique Mexican Plate is 145p, chiles en nogada or rellenos is 80p, pork with garlic chile ancho sauce is 85p, pork loin in orange sauce is 95p, shrimp Giovanni is 175p, and the "best" Puebla chicken mole is 110p, cream of peanut soup is 45p, wonderful tortilla soup is 40p, and generous guacamole and Panela cheese with chile de tenir (ancho) sauce is 50p. Artwork immortalizes Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, plus Hollywood stars. This is not a place which will soon be forgotten. Placemats have clever information. Top margaritas. Reservations recommended. Non-smoking. No CC.
