Fresh Fruit With Every Breakfast

Located in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone, Mama Dolores is known best for its evening meals but The Fruit Deli runs the place in the mornings. We wandered in not knowing what to expect. There is patio seating out front, looking over the street and there are a handful of tables inside. It is a simple place with plastic tables and chairs and limited décor but very comfortable. The balcony was full, mostly Americans and Canadians, so we sat inside.

A friendly English speaking lady came over and took our drink orders. It was close to the two o’clock closing hour but we didn’t feel rushed. The menu was very long offering numerous fresh juice combinations. Crepes, waffles, French toast, and bagels were served a myriad of ways. The array of egg dishes was astounding, omelets and Benedict-like dishes seemed to be specialties. There was even a children’s menu and a short lunch menu. Most breakfast came with baked beans, hash browns, fresh fruit and toast. The prices were very reasonable with meals costing between forty and eighty-five pesos.

We tried to decide quickly but the selection was overwhelming. Not once were we rushed. We finally placed our order and were quickly served. Sails had the Florentine Benes – two poached eggs with spinach on an English muffin and covered in hollandaise sauce. It was good. The eggs were cooked medium, which is what he asked for and the sauce was wonderfully smooth. I had the vegetarian omelet which comes with spinach, mushrooms, onion and tomato. I said yes when the waitress asked if I wanted other vegetables too, so it also had asparagus and zucchini in it. It was a good omelet, and huge. Both breakfasts were served with fried potato chunks that were beautifully spiced, fresh fruit (a thin slice each of watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, banana and orange) and toast. We were happy.

I recommend The Fruit Deli. The service was super friendly and efficient; the food was good and the prices inexpensive. In the mornings (and sometimes into the afternoon) we barely function. We eat breakfast at the same places over and over again. This is definitely going onto the no-brainers list.

Sails said, "Good eggs Benedict, good omelets, good food in general and friendly service too. What are poutines?"
