El Set

El Set

So we headed off in our little Nissan down the hill and took a left onto Mexico 200 and drove just a few blocks down the road to El Set Restaurant, http://www.elset.com.mx ( we could see it from our balcony on the hill). I had another oooh and ahh moment, as we saw the interior of the restaurant, with all its tropical décor and the beautiful view of the bay. Leo, our waiter, came to the table and greeted us with a warmth and sincerity that is very often missing here in the States. He has worked at El Set for 7 years, and we highly recommend asking for him.

He suggested their special promotion, which included one drink, soup or salad, a large platter of lobster, shrimp, filet mignon, with baked potato, a glass of wine, choice of dessert, followed by a flaming coffee, for 800 pesos. At first, we thought that was a little pricey just for one, but when Leo assured us that there was plenty for two, John said, "Oh what the heck, it’s our first night here," and ordered.

Everything was outstanding, from salad to dessert, and more than enough for the two of us. Leo prepared our flaming coffee at the table - it was quite a production. I had the Spanish coffee, which had tequila, brandy, etc. - olaaaaaaaa!

After dinner, we went downstairs to the patio, then down to the beach to walk dinner off. This is definitely the place to have your first meal in Vallarta!

El Set is named for the many movies that have been filmed over the years in its residential location of Conchas Chinas. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at this spot, located seven flights down from street level, but it would be a shame to visit at any other time other than just before sunset. El Set is built into the side of a winding cliff--a short and inexpensive taxi ride from the Zona Romantica. Neighbor to several multi-million dollar mansions, El Set overlooks the rocky Pacific and offers the most breathtaking sunset vistas.

This is a great restaurant to visit if you have become jaded with enchiladas and tacos. They do serve Mexican fare, but their real specialty is seafood.

We started off sharing a plate of stuffed peppers that were fantastic—filled with cheese and just spicy enough to be interesting. I ordered the salmon entrée, and it was grilled to perfection. My boyfriend and the couple that we were with ordered some version of grilled fish and pasta. The wine list was imbalanced. Your options are: pay less and get a noticeably inferior-tasting wine, or be prepared to pay more than necessary for a very good bottle from France.

Overall, El Set combines a romantic atmosphere with great food. This is an ideal dining experience for those who are tempted to try the Mexican interpretation of international cuisine.

El Set can be found near the Conchas Chinas beach. It's a beautiful restaurant by the cliff, however I was very disappointed by its Mexican entrees. I had the Molcajetes (which I've had better here in Philly) though my husband and the couple we were with had seafood, which according to them was excellent. I'm in Mexico, and I want real, authentic Mexican food and for a fine dining establishment it was overly priced and didn't meet my expectations. On a good note their drinks were great and appetizers were pretty good.

If you want seafood and a spectacular view of the ocean and sunset, then this is the place to go, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny.

We went to El Set and dinner was fabulous. The service was unbeatable and the waiters were very friendly and helpful and speedy.

Some of the food was cooked at the table. Usually people want to be there for the fantastic sunset view. The decor is very nice. We had ten people with us and everyone raved about it.

The special for that night was a dinner for two people -- filet mignon, lobster and shrimp. It included soup or salad, rice and baked potato. Magnifico!
