As a connoisseur of the greasy spoon, eating on a budget has never been a problem for me, until I got to Key West!
After an endless stream of cafes and restaurants serving Cuban sandwiches for an average price of $8, I finally discovered what has become my favorite; The 5 Brothers Sandwich Shop and grocery! Located at 930 Southard St., 5 Bros. from the outside, looks like your average storefront grocery, although upon entering you notice a sandwich counter in the back. "What’s so unusual about that?" you may ask. "Not much," I would reply, "UNTIL you check out the prices!"
5 Bros. has 19 different Cuban sandwiches, all priced under $5. My favorite is the BBQ pork at $3.95. These large sandwiches are very filling, but if you wish to accessorize you can get an order of delightful yuca fries smothered in garlic for $1.50, or add a ham croquette at 60 cents each, or a meat empanada for $1.00!
The famous Key West conch fritters that you find virtually anywhere on the island for an average price of $6.00 for 1/2 dozen are only $2.75 at 5 Brothers!
Breakfast? Enjoy an egg and cheese sandwich for $2.50 or a homemade guava pastry for 50 cents! Top it off with a delicious cup of cafe con leche and you’ll be ready for a day of sightseeing.
5 Bros. also features daily specials. Amongst these are the Cuban favorites Ropa Veija with white rice, white beans and plantain, or oxtail with yuca and moros.
If you have a sweet tooth you can grab a quart of locally made ice cream in flavors like Cuban Coffee, Soursop, and Cuban Banana.
Tito, one of the actual 5 brothers , will greet you, make your sandwich AND give friendly tips even going so far as to explain what soursop actually is! (in Spanish it’s guanabana, a green, spiky fruit that grows locally on trees). While waiting for your food, you may want to peruse the assortment of guava-based items or interesting sauces that adorn the shelves.
5 Brothers is the perfect place to grab that picnic lunch for the beach or the breakfast on the go. Their hours are M-S 6am to 4pm. The accept cash and credit cards. Enjoy!
