Everything from the all-you-can-drink mai tai's to the excellent Kauai roast pig, everything was amazing, would definitely recommend it.
Also the lush botanical gardens, and all the animals definitely added to the authentic atmosphere.

Luau is a Bust

The food was sub-par. It was equivalent to something found at any typical all-you-can-eat buffet. The show was very commercialized and not very authentic – you sit in bleachers watching from afar. The dances were almost an insult to the different cultures. Everyone ignored the no flash policy and it made it difficult to watch the show. Because of the free alcohol there were many drunks that were very disorderly. When complained to the staff they did not care as they already had our money and just wanted us to leave. I would suggest going elsewhere. Not a family place!

The food at the Luau was really good and there was plenty of it. The mai-tai's were a little watered down, but they still tasted good. It is located on a 30 acre garden and it is really a beautiful location. The show wasn't bad, but it was nothing to write home about.

Smith Family Luau

I have been to luaus on Oahu and Maui and have always had good experiences, but Smith Family has the worst PERFORMANCE I have seen. The garden was a bit cheesy, but lush and expansive, and the food and drinks were wonderful, but the performance was a "modern" luau, and I noticed people leaving soon after it started. And it was the most expensive luau I've been to.

Go to one on another island--supposedly this is the best one on Kauai. Scary!

This Smith's Family Luau is the ultimate luau experience. I recommend the Fern Grotto Cruise at 3:30pm for just $15 -- it will take you back to the park at 5pm when the luau grounds open. Make sure to park by the luau and walk to the cruise. You will walk the beautiful garden park before the luau begins. Purchase the bird seed for $.50 and watch everything from chickens to peacocks follow you.

The Imu ceremony starts at 7pm, followed by the dinner. It is all you can eat and drink for one price: $58. Most luaus limit the number of drinks or do not include an open bar, unlike this one. The luau show is fantastic with volcano eruptions and dancers from all over the islands. It is also performed at an ampitheater, so no seat is a bad seat.
