Bubba Gump's Restaurant

This is where the old Jolly Rogers used to be on Ali'i Drive. We ate here during summer and we especially enjoyed the outside seating. The restaurant overlooks Kailua Bay and the best time to dine is at sunset around 7:00 p.m. during the summer. Bubba Gump's has an extensive menu which consists of shrimp, ribs, steak, pasta, burgers and sandwiches. I ordered their deep fried shrimp and french fries dish which was very tasty. You wouldn't believe how fresh and juicy their shrimp tastes! I would recommend bringing your family to this restaurant only if you can get outside seating because you don't want to miss the spectacular Kona sunsets. They are located across the street from Saint Michael's Catholic Church. They are open from Sunday - Thursday from 10am - 11pm and on Friday - Saturday from 10am - 12am. The wait staff are very upbeat and friendly. Service is very fast even when it is busy on the weekends. There is hardly any free parking near the restaurant but they do have paid parking across the street.

We remembered this name from the movie Forrest Gump, and decided to try it. They have very good seafood. Some in our party had the coconut shrimp and that was too tasty. The bucket of shrimp that they serve in a real bucket was very good too. We ate outside by the ocean and really hated to leave when the meal was over.

This restaurant is excellent, from the appetizers to the dessert! Of course, in Hawaii, you cannot beat the outdoor dining overlooking the ocean, so the atmosphere is also excellent!

We had the "Chilly Shrimp", which is their Peel and Eat done up in Southern Style. We also had the Jenny's Favorite Smoothie--cranberry juice, strawberries, and non-fat raspberry yogurt. What a refreshing drink! As an entree I had their Bourbon Street Mahi Mahi. The garlic mashed potatoes are scrumptious! We barely had room to split a delicious Key Lime Pie between the four of us.

We enjoy this restaurant so much that we have been to the one in Chicago and the newly opened one at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

It's a good place for families. The atmosphere is casual and fun. The Forest Gump theme is throughout the restaurant. The food is good and they have a kid's menu - which is hard to find if you have picky kids.

It was a fun time. They had lots of memorabilia from the motion picture, and had inside dining as well as dining right on the water. If you wanted the attention of your waitstaff you would raise the sign on your table that said "Stop Forrest." The food was good and about average cost for that area.
