Hogs Breath - I'll Say!!

Ok, we liked the Tee's and our first Rumrunner -- later that night
we came back in to a crowed bar and my girlfriend ordered two Rumrunners (we always prefer over ice, not frozen) anyway, he
delivered two frozen without asking -- So in an attempt to get the Bartenders attention, she called and then had to whistle because of the noise -- He came back and started yelling at her saying don't ever whisle and no you can't have your drink on the rocks unless you pay double!! We took the receipt and crossed it out -- and left without the drinks! I would never go in there again. I mean we were the customers, spending so much money and just expecting good service from bartenders wanting to please, but instead treated us like we were priviledged just to be in there I guess! Maybe that's why other locations are closing!!

What a fun restaurant! We ate here and will never forget it! The food is delish and served in big helpings! The staff is fun and friendly, and the name is synonymous with the personality of the restaurant--quirky and fun! They also had a big gift shop where you can purchase Hog's Breath clothing and keepsakes. I went "hog wild" there! 'Hog's Breath is better than no breath at all' is their slogan. Ha! I love it!

To get to the restaurant, you have to fight your way through an over-stocked (and overpriced) gift shop. When you get there, it is such a disappointment. It is a Key West "institution," but they've obviously got stars in their eyes and don't really care about the restaurant.

Hogs Breath Saloon

What it’s Like: Hogs Breath Saloon consists of a restaurant, gift shop and a large outdoor bar. Live bands play at night attracting a crowd in from the street. You can sit outside at the bar if you are eating along with the drinks, but if you want to just stop in for a drink, plan to stand at the bar which gets very crowded once the music starts. The bar makes for a nice stop even during the day because there are large trees providing shade for the bar and they also have several fans. The bar gets a wonderful breeze since it is on a corner the breeze was blowing from two directions.

Drinks: They had several drink specials, all of which were $8 for the first glass and $6 for each refill. The first drink came with a souvenir glass so we ordered a few of those. I had the Rumrunner and the general consensus was that the drinks did not have any alcohol in them. We switched to beer for our second round.

Food: We wanted some oysters from their raw bar but they were out of oysters that night. The waitress suggested the "peel and eat" shrimp so we ordered that instead. We also ordered the "Awesome" Smoked Fish Dip for $6.95, which was made with five ounces of hickory smoked dolphin in a creamy dip and is served with crackers. I expected it to be the consistency of pate or a cream cheese dip, but it was runny and the consistency of ground tuna. It was tasty all the same and we ordered a second plate of shrimp because they were so good!

The World Famous Hog's Breath Saloon! Whatever. The drinks were way overpriced, and the food was average at best. This was the first place I had visited on Duval St. and for a week or so it soured me on the whole area. Nothing was really that bad, but it seemed like the place was just relying on its reputation to bring in the tourists. Even the bar was tame, although it was a weeknight. One of my friends had a burger, and he said it was pretty good. My steak sandwich was okay. My other friends had the fish sandwich, and both said they'd had better on the island.
