Gotta Order it Animal Style

My brother-in-law, whose been living in San Francisco for sometime now, could not stop talking about In-N-Out Burger, so of course we had to visit. I have to say it was really good - as far as fast food restaurants go. Order your burger Animal Style and they put everything on it. Their commitment to sustainability and a local supply chain is a major draw.

Here is an excerpt from their Wikipedia entry:

In-N-Out Burger, usually called In-N-Out, is a regional chain of fast food restaurants located in the Western United States. Founded in 1948 by Harry Snyder and his wife Esther, and headquartered in Irvine, California, In-N-Out Burger has since expanded outside Southern California to the rest of the state, and to Arizona, Nevada, and southern Utah as well. In-N-Out has never franchised, and plans to remain privately owned. The company's business practices have been noted for employee-centric personnel policies. For example, In-N-Out is one of the few fast food chains in the United States to pay its employees significantly more than state and federally-mandated minimum wage guidelines – starting at $10 per hour in California, as of January 2008.

In-N-Out Burger

We'd heard of In-N-Out from our friends who lived out west for years, but living on the East Coast, we'd never had the opportunity to visit, until our trip to San Fran. Founded in 1948 and styled as a retro-style diner, this burger joint is well worth the visit, especially for a cheap meal in an expensive city.

The menu is shockingly simple, with only five items (hamburger, cheeseburger, double hamburger, fries, drinks/shakes) ranging from $.99 to a couple dollars. Fresh ingredients is what this place prides itself on; no burger is ever frozen, and the potato is cut on-site when fries are ordered. Of course, being vegetarians, my husband and I thought we'd be out of luck for the main dish, but there is a "secret menu" that the regulars know. We ordered a "grilled cheese: animal style", and it was amazing! "Animal style" is code for "all the toppings please", which include lettuce, tomato, mustard, pickles, grilled onions, and extra special sauce. You never would've known our burger was missing the meat! So, if you're ever in San Fran, make a stop at the famous In-N-Out - well worth it!

IN-N-OUT Burger

This is the BEST burger I have ever had!!! In-N-Out is a fast-food chain only in the southern West Coast that is amazing! Not only were the portions HUGE, but the service is friendly and the food is WICKED cheap! A cheeseburger is $1.80 and a double-double burger (double meat, double cheese) is $2.80. It's not greasy at all and everything is fresh. If this were everywhere, it would definitely take over Burger King or McDonald's! The only one in San Francisco is located right in Fisherman's Wharf.
