Typical organic farm shop and cafe

The grow salad vegetables, apples, beans, celery, cucumbers, herbs, jerusalem artichokes, kale, leeks and more. They also have laying hens and breed Christmas turkeys.

The produce is available through delivery of organic boxes, but is also sold in the busy shop. As a tourist attraction, The Pillars of Hercules are meaningful particularly as a cafe/restaurant though, located only a short drive (or manageable cycle) from Falkland, and a good place for a meal or a snack after visiting the Falkland Palace or hiking in the Lomond Hills.

The Pillars IS first and foremost an organic farm, and a shop, with all the attendant dubious organic mumbo-jumbo, but the net result is that in season you can often buy very good - and keenly priced, which is unusual for such places - produce here, as well the always popular eggs. At other times, it's your typical vastly overpriced mix of local(ish) fruit and veg and deli foodstuffs from all over Europe if not all over the world the world.

The cafe is nice enough, and frequented by a mix of people from the Land Rover Mummy types who could kill you with their looks if you dare to get out a bottle to feed your infant to normal people (some of them also in Land Rovers :-).

The food is fresh and reasonably good, though not mind-blowingly fantastic, and the setting, especially outside on the shady verandah, is very pleasant in the summer. All items are vegetarian and organic, many vegan. You can eat soups, toasties, paninis, salads and brownies as well a daily cooked special. They also have recently branched into a ''regular restaurant'' – a monthly or fortnightly evening with a set price menu (£33 per person so not exactly cheap). It is, however, four courses and coffee is included (though you need to bring wine as there is no licence).

They also have camping areas as well as a holiday cottage aka the bothy and a marked farm walk trail. Altogether, the place is a bit of a local institution.

If you skip the organic and sustainable hype, it is still, all in all, a decent venue, especially if you like vegetarian food, but not quite as special as it would like to believe of itself. If you are into the organic and sustainable lifestyle, then the Pillars of Hercules is the place you should definitely visit if in Fife. Close
