However, I was to be ...Read more Villa d'Este is one of the most surprising restaurants I have ever visited. From the street, it looks small and rather unassuming. Therefore, when a party of friends and stepped in side, I was not expecting too much fanfare. However, I was to be massively surprised by the size of the restaurant, by its rather lavish style and by some of the food on the menu.

Villa d'Este has a small terrace outside. Basing my expectations on this, I presumed that I would find a small dining area inside. This was absolutely not the case. In fact, I found myself astounded at just how big it was. Not only were there two floors, but the main room stretched back and back, and then added an extra enclave of seating just for good measure. The large interior was also lavishly decorated with huge photos in gilt frames and large chandeliers dangling from the roof. The feeling of decadence was emphasized well by the waiters bright pink ties.

The food at Villa d'Este was very good, but fell short of being spectacular. The majority of our party opted for pizza. I had Pizza Reine (ham and mushroom), which was excellent and huge. I was very impressed to find that the toppings were of very high quality – the ham was a good cut of meat, not just something processed. All of the pizzas were large and very appetizing. The one black-spot on the meal was the Sole my girlfriend had. It was quite small and very greasy.

For the majority of the duration of our meal, we sat chatting amiably and enjoying a glass of very good house red. However, at frequent junctures, I found myself drifting away from the conversation when I saw some of the deserts that were being taken to other tables. They were huge. They also looked fantastic. I saw a crème Caramel that looked the size of a football and jiggled stupendously as it was ferried to the table. My girlfriend and I opted for the profiteroles, which were immense. They were not only extremely large, but were stuffed with delicious ice-cream and handsomely adorned with cram and chocolate.

Villa d'Este was a very pleasant surprise. The food was very good and came in impressive portions. It was, though, a little on the expensive side. For my pizza, my girlfriend's fish, the profiteroles and two small carafes of wine, we spent over 65 Euros. I would recommend it though. Close
