Description: Unfortunately the UK has seen quite a cull of the traditional pub over recent years, with the rise in drink prices and the availability of vastly cheaper options in the supermarkets. The Scape House Inn was one of the most notable victims in the Huddersfield area, and I was delighted to hear that the place had recently reopened.
The Scape House Inn is located in one of Huddersfield's prettier areas, Scapegoat Hill, and makes for a good place to stop during or after a hike of the area. We visited for a beer one spring Sunday afternoon and found the place fairly busy with the smell of very good cooking in our noses.
For ale, the pub serves one of my favourites, the Lake District's Jennings, and we found the beer still kept its beers well; as this is a foody place, there is in particular also a good choice of wine on offer behind the bar. Although we didn’t eat, a friend has done lately, and recommended the place; they do reasonable deals on 2 course menus. The only criticism is that there is only one veggie choice on at any one time.
The inside of the bar looked like a traditional country pub; I was pleased to see it, as one of the previous short-term owners was later arrested for stripping various bars of their contents to furnish bars in Cyprus. He didn't seem to get much of a grasp of the furnishings of the Scape House as it all looked pretty much as I remembered it.
The views around the Scape House are particularly attractive, and it is something of a shame that the view from the pub itself is a little lacking. There is also limited outside seating, with just a couple of tables directly in front of the pub, close to the little road through Scapegoat Hill village.
