Caffe Coco

Caffe Coco was one of our second dinning experiences and located next to Mema Thai. This little hole-in-the-wall type restaurant had both indoor and outdoor seating, though the favorite was dining outdoors in the back. They feature live music nightly, and their menu is very eclectic.

They have both meat and vegetarian dishes - actually, any dish that has meat can be fixed with tofu for the vegetarian traveling among your group. The dishes are prepared with great care and artistic expression, though their prices tended to be on the high side for the dinning experience you were enjoying. Their desserts were killer. All of their dishes are organic, and their outdoor dinning is served in an informal, vine-covered garden setting.

It is an excellent dining experience whether you’re there for lunch, dinner, or just a late-night dessert. Be sure to check out the live music. We enjoyed a belly-dancing troop while enjoying their desserts one night as a follow-up to a wonderful dinner earlier in the week.

Caffe Coco can be difficult to find. It’s just north of the Wailua Bridge, right after the road sort of "Ys" at the gas station, across from the Kintaro Japanese restaurant. Unbelievable food, very organic, very green. No red meat. No liquor license, but they don't mind if you bring your own bottle of wine, and they will happily provide a corkscrew and glasses for a small corkage fee. The ginger lemonade is incredible, and seriously, the tofu pot stickers are to die for. Seriously. The service is very laaaaaid back, like wow, man, but they know you're there; they're just groovin' their thing. Order at the "counter" and find your seat in the garden in the back and marvel at the delicious smells coming out of the postage stamp-sized kitchen. Sometimes they have live acoustic music. I love this place. It can be expensive or inexpensive, depending on what you order. No reservations required, but you might want a sweater and bug juice (bug spray).

We ate out a lot while we were in Kauai, and if I compare Caffe Coco (that's right, 2 Fs) with the more upscale restaurants in the resort hotels, it wins my vote. We found out that it's BYOB with a $5 corking fee, so we crossed the street to the Shell gas station mini-mart and bought ourselves a $7 bottle of Shiraz.

Dining is outdoors under a huge tent lit with torches. There is live Hawaiian and jazz music on Thursday nights. It's all very relaxing, except for the mosquitoes that devour your legs while you try to eat. Spray Off! Lotion and wear loose pants when you come in here for dinner. (They also have their own spray, and you can request for the citronella candles to be placed near your table.)
