Restaurant Named After Mosquitos

One of Florence's more popular stops for dinner among visitors and locals alike is that of Trattoria Za' Za'. Located behind the Mercato Centrale, this restaurant is always bustling with patrons during lunch and dinner. As it's popularity has grown through the years, more and more visitors seek it out and it's become quite a touristy place, but the food is still made in a Tuscan discipline and with care.
Opened since 1977, the staff has been serving traditional Tuscan dishes, some with a special flair. We ended up booking a table for a group of friends, and enjoyed a full meal over wine and conversation. There are several crostini and soups for appetizers and then plenty of fresh pasta and risotto dishes for the first course. This is where we stopped, but several others at the table enjoyed meat dishes for the second course, and we all finished with homemade desserts.
The ambiance is fun, a bit loud, as the dining room is almost always full, and the tables are close. The walls are covered with past articles, photos, over original bricks, or the other walls are painted stucco with colorful murals. During the days of good weather there is an outdoor deck area with umbrellas, and inside there is a shop area where you can take home shirts or recipes from your visit to Za' Za'.
Look for their sign with a naked baby with mosquito bites on his bum (as Za" Za' is short for "zanzara" which means "moquito" in Italian). It's a funny sign for a fun restaurant. Reservations are recommended, and you can call it in, or even fill out their online reservation form on the website. Prices are moderate, and service and taste are consistently good.

The young salesman who sold us our leather jackets highly recommended this place. His store was just one black away. We made reservations for the next evening. It was EXTREMELY crouded but it was the best food I have ever put into my mouth. I tried my husbands beef ravioli (and I hate beef) and I could have snatched the whole plate from him and ate it. I had baked chicken with a truffle sauce and . . . ahhhh... awesome!!

Located behind the Mercato Centrale, great outside seating which is a little more comfortable because inside is a little tight. I always had the Pizza Za Za which had pesto, mozzarella, and vegetables, amazing. Known for their ribolita, Tuscan bread soup with vegetables.

What a horrible disappointment! All the guidebooks recommend it, but not me. We will never go back. The food was substandard and cold, the waitress had face piercings; it was disgusting! There are so many
wonderful places to go, please do yourself a favor and save your time and money.

This little restaurant came highly recommended, but it was rather crowded and noisy -- for a good reason: the food was amazing. The service, however, was far from perfect. It was so good though that I would return in a second!
