We Still Dream Of Our Return

My wife and I visited Florence in January of 2007 and Restorante Paoli was a big part of the experience. We stumbled across it late one night after a day at the Uffizi. We were tired and couldn't decide what we wanted. Our waiter Roberto said "leave it to me, leave it to me" and we did. A fresh salad was made at our table while Roberto went to the kitchen to retrieve a plate sized steak for me and a succulent veal chop with truffles for my wife. We ordered an inexpensive bottle of wine and tucked in. Perfect.

The dessert trolley rolled by. I wanted to say, "leave it with us" but Alberto was so accommodating I was worried that he would. So I chose fresh strawberries and cream and my wife had profiteroles.

For three consecutive nights we left it up to Roberto and he never disappointed us.

It looks small from the entrance but opens up into a comfortably sized space at the rear. It's hussle, bussle and a little loud but that's only because it's all too easy to forget yourself in this beautiful restaurant (that, and the wine list is quite good).

Despite the noise and tight squeezes, this is still a very romantic restaurant. The fact that my first son was born nine months after we left Florence should be all the proof you need of that.

The long and short of this is that this was one of the best meals we had in Florence. We were told about it by friends who had been there nine months before and they highly recommended the Ribollita. You have to try the ribollita. It is to die for! Very filling so only order an appetizer unless you are a Big eater.

Restaurant Paoli

We found the best restaurant from our entire Italian vacation in Floence. Restaurant Paoli was amazing. The food was without a doubt the best we had on our 2-week vacation, plenty of choices and local specialties, but it doesn't really matter what you order, it's good! The dining room is located underneath beautifully frescoed arches and the waitstaff consists of older Italian men decked out in formal attire (most of whom speak English, and the menu is in Italian and English as well). My only complaint is that the pink linened tables are a little close together, so you can either make nice with your neighbors, or eavesdrop easily! The three-course "tourist menu" is around 20 Euro and really good. However, if you order courses seperately from the menu it is quite a bit pricier (10 Euro pastas, 15 Euro secondi). Reservations are recommended, but if you show up right at 7pm (when they open for dinner) you might be able to snag a table, we did.

We had a delightful meal at the "Paoli" on Via dei Travolini in a spectacular setting of vaulted hall & medieval frescoes. Though dark & rather small, it was a welcome respite from the crowds. Waiters wore white jackets, but didn't seem to mind we were "tourist casual". Fresh flowers graced the front entrance. I ordered the Toglisrelle ei funghi (or something like that), which was a pasta dish w/ mushrooms & a delicious sauce. Very good. Credit cards are accepted.

This place was great!

Frescos were painted on the walls, which totally added to the mood.

The waiters at first seem like they don't like you, but they're really nice and helpful and definitely want you to enjoy your meal.

We met a guy who comes back to Florence a lot and always goes there first.

Make sure to order the salad. I know it sounds strange - but they make it tableside in front of you with such fresh vegetables and it is so good. Pasta, soup and risotto are great there too. I didn't try it but was told the spinach omelette is also great.

Save room for dessert.
