Solid Mexican Food in the District

Solid Mexican Food in the District

During my four years in college in DC, every February when my birthday rolled around, I would go with a troupe of my friends to Lauriol Plaza for an evening of Margaritas and Mexican food. Therefore, I have a soft place in my heart for Lauriol. It is though, an excellent Mexican restaurant in DC. Purists may say it's not real Mexican food, but it's certainly not Tex-Mex overly cheesy schlock.

During the day, for lunch, Lauriol has an easy-going atmosphere and it's fairly easy to get a table since there are three levels to the place. In the evening, on the weekends, it has a definite "going-out" air. Low lighting, two hour wait times for table, and lots of young people. Point being, if it's a weekend and you want low-key Mexican food, go elsewhere or try going early to Lauriol's sister restaurant Cactus Cantina - it'll still be busy and its near American University, but it has more of a family vibe and there is more sitting area. However, if you're out with some friends and you want to down several margaritas and a couple baskets of chips before dinner, you can't beat Lauriol (they have pork laced salsa!!). I always had tons of fun.

On the food, like I said - it's definitely crowd pleasing, so don't get on your foodie high horse. Nevertheless, it's very very tasty and has moments of authenticity. This last trip, while my friend recently returned from a long stay in Mexico turned her nose up at the lime, swirled, icy margaritas, the rest of my friends and I slurped one after another down like it was our business. I tend to get the Guadalajara platter (beef taco, enchilada, tamale, rice, and beans), but a week or so ago (on a non-birthday outing) I stepped out of my box for some lamb fajitas and was very pleased.

Sum up: Whether you're looking for an evening out in DC designed around eating out or just some solid Mexican food, Lauriol Plaza is superb.

In many ways, the food at Lauriol Plaza takes second place to the swirl margaritas that have made this three-level restaurant on the outskirts of Dupont Circle overflow with people from the moment spring sets in. With two possibilities for outdoor dining, the partially covered third-floor rooftop and the street-level dining under the awning, Lauriol Plaza is always packed. And the reason why: the swirl margaritas--in strawberry and mango. Or original, it's up to you. You won't be disappointed with a pitcher of swirls for around $15 to split among your friends. They come with warm tortilla chips and salsa, and if you have to wait for a table, grab your swirls and your chips and crowd around the outdoor area with the scores of others. Crowded? Yes, and starting around 5pm. But when you get to your table, it's pretty well-spaced out and you're not sitting in anyone's lap. And you can just sit there and enjoy your swirl and your chips without eating, if it's not super crowded.

Now, when it comes down to ordering food from the menu, it's more of a challenge. You can't go wrong with any of their margaritas, but you can go wrong with some of their food. You shouldn't go in expecting authenticity. The best bet: to eat the Brazilian salad. The vinaigrette has a delicious tang to it, and the avocados are ripened close to perfection. The chicken enchiladas are decent, but nothing special. There's a special there--shrimp prepared in a Spanish style with a cream sauce--that I would recommend. I've never had the dish in Spain that I can remember, but it tastes better than many of the other options on the menu. Friends of mine have also had the bistec (or carne) salteado(a), which is better than the straight up Mexican fare--the burritos, enchiladas, and chiles rellenos.

Go to Lauriol Plaza expecting to be fully satisfied by delicious drinks, which offset the mediocre (but cheap) food. If you don't like the Dupont scene, go a little farther up between Georgetown and Glover Park and hit up Lauriol Plaza's sister restaurant, Cactus Cantina, which also has indoor and outdoor seating.

Talk about a fun place to be! There's hardly ever a time you won't find this restaurant completely filled to its maximum capacity, and on weekends, don't be surprised to wait up to 45 minutes! LP doesn't take reservations, but those waiting in line know that the LP is well worth the wait.

Located in the trendy Dupont Circle area, LP is housed in a large, airy building with lots of windows and rooftop seating for the summers and spring. The waiters are friendly -- even while juggling massive amounts of customers, they never fail to greet you with a smile. This summer, while interning in DC, my co-workers and I had many half-days at work where we'd lock the doors early and head out to LP to beat the crowds of other interns, public policy champs, and the like.

Although it costs about 24 bucks, the pitchers of peach-rita (blended, not on rocks) are well worth it and so pretty to look at! They also offer mango-ritas and stawberry margaritas. Along with pitchers of margaritas, you could get a classic Sangria. They also have a selections of tequila shots, cervesas, and a long list of wines.

The food, of course, is a mix of your classic Tex-Mex faves, but on top of that, they offer some Spanish specialties like my favorite, paella, which comes loaded with seafood and tastes wonderful. I never eat it alone, though -- the portion is quite large, so usually a friend and I split an order of quesadillas and the paella. Some other dishes I've tried and have enjoyed are the Brazilian Salad, the chicken and beef combo fajitas, and the chicken platter that came with chicken enchilada, chicken taco, and chicken tamale.

The prices are anywhere from $4-10 for appetizers, $8-10 for salads, and $8-15 for main dishes. I highly recommend going to Lauriol many, many times.

Perfect for a sunny, warm evening. Sit outside, on the roof, and sip margarita swirls. Salsa (that comes with the free chips) is some of the best in town. Best described as Tex-Mex with a cuban kick, my boss swears the only way she'll eat roast pork is at this place. It would also be a mistake to pass on the fried plantains. Portions are perfect, atmosphere is ideal, prices are more than reasonable...one of the best places to dine in DC.
