Le Pot au Feu

Walk directly south from Amsterdam's Centraal Station and on the right-hand side of Damrak, you will find Le Pot au Feu about halfway down the block on your right.

The exterior is not so special and quaint-looking that it would immediately draw you inside, but once you enter, you will note the pleasant ambiance. (On nice days, this spills out onto the sidewalk where tables made for people-watching on this bustling thoroughfare are situated).

The menu is varied and includes some traditional Dutch specialties, along with plenty of familiar, filling meals that anyone who is comfortable in a typical diner or bistro would find easy to enjoy. The orange juice is freshly-squeezed. The beer flows freely and goes down well, so we had an easy time staying for hours between the bar and the dining area in this narrow, cubby-hole of a place. Our young bartender, David, was engaging and well worth a good tip; plenty attentive even though he was often scrambling to serve many customers.

This is a very busy place and you will find people from all over Europe stopping in because of its proximity to the train station. An added plus is that there are coin-operated internet consoles where you can check your e-mail and keep in touch or surf your favorite websites. We found ourselves stopping back again for a few more happy hours and a meal after our first visit -- it's just that kind of friendly place! It is not large enough for a person to go unnoticed for long and you will quickly find yourself making new friends.
