Overpriced, Overcrowded

I have been to quite a few HRCs around the world (Melbourne, Orlando, NY, Manchester, to name a few) and I can safely say the Amsterdam one is now one of the worst I have been to. Not only it's overcrowded (Ok many of them are but they give good food choice and good service) but also the quality of the food and the ambiance in some parts of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. 6 years ago I went there and it was good. This time it has gone seriously downhill and I will certainly not bother again. Perhaps it's the new manager's fault. Who knows, but I know we did not like it there anymore. You felt like they thought they were doing you a favour by letting you eat there. All other HRCs give the excellent customer service and good food that you expect, but Amsterdam's gets a big thumbs down.
Solid American Food

Ah yes. The typical American cop-out - eat at a Hard Rock Cafe. But at least you know the food will be the same most everywhere, the bathrooms are clean and free, and there was outdoor seating on a sunny day. Sold.
Funny enough, we sat outdoors at a table right next to some Hard Rock Cafe big wigs. They were there to check up on the restaurant, the wait staff, and the chefs. They ordered sample items off the menu and were "grading" them on presentation, quality, taste, etc. We eavesdropped a bit, so I think we had a good idea of what not to order. Turns out, it was a rough day for the chef trainees. The big wigs rode them pretty hard.
However, I ordered the Tupelo chicken tenders, and the handsome lunch partner ordered a burger, and both of us were pleased with the result. The big wigs even asked us how we were doing, and if all was okay. So it felt kind of nice to get the extra attention. Our waiter was from Sydney, and he did a great job, too. So it was a good lunch experience for 30 Euros (which included drinks.)
Of course, there was a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe shop, because who doesn’t think a Hard Rock Amsterdam shirt isn’t cool. Of course, they’re not cool at 30 Euro a pop, so we didn’t buy any. But we did get coupons that gave us a percentage off if we spent 40 Euro, which I thought was a nice, but necessary at those prices gesture.
So I’ll admit that it wasn’t some Dutch gourmet experience, but it was a decent lunch, and that’s all that matters.

Worst place I have ever been to. We went there just for a drink and a snack. At the door when we asked for a table we were barked at by the rudest host I have ever seen. She put us on a wait list for 1/2 hour even though the place was empty. It took 15 minutes for a server to come to our table. When we placed our order, the server said they couldn't serve appetizers and sodas at the tables, we had to go down to the bar. We pointed out that we had already said that was what we wanted and had waited a 1/2 hour for the table. She said that wasn't her problem and walked away. We went back to the host who seemed put out by having to deal with us and said also we should go to the bar. At that point we decided to leave- Wagamama across the square was more than happy to take our money and serve us food and drinks in less than 15 minutes.
So many Mice

We went to Hard Rock in Amsterdam and will not be returning. The service was terrible, not at all what you would expect from an American restaurant. The restaurant was empty on a Wednesday night, but our food still took almost an hour. When we got it, the steak was burnt on one side and the mashed potatoes were hard. It took us 10 minutes to get our server's attention to get the food re-cooked. While we were waiting TWO mice ran past our table. We asked to speak to a manager, who didn't come to our table for almost 15 minutes. Needless to say this was one experience we would not recommend!

My favorite restaurant in Amsterdam is the Hard Rock Cafe. Really, you say? An American chain restaurant is your favorite travel destination. We go every time we hit Amsterdam, at least once. They have a lovely terrace on the water that faces the sun where you can sip cocktails, eat delicious fattening food and just relax. After a day of museum-visiting and people watching it is the ultimate chill out spot. The service is fun and friendly and the vibe is welcoming. I wouldn't go every day, but it is truly a nice place to go with good food and service. We like to watch the boats go by and try to convince them to take us onboard!
