After a long day exploring Colonial Williamsburg, we sought out a place for dinner. Of the five restaurants in Colonial Williamsburg, we were able to obtain reservations at Shield’s Tavern. The tavern serves both lunch and dinner and each meal is served in a different style. During the day, the tavern operates as an 18th century coffeehouse. Menu items include honey ham biscuits, soups, fruit, cakes as well as a number of other pastries. Dinner operates in an entirely different style.

We arrived around six for our reservation at 6:30. We were led inside the tavern but instead of being seated upstairs, we were led downstairs into the basement. We were led into a dim lighted dining area illuminated by candles. The dining area has huge wooden tables with antiques scattered about and paintings adorning the walls in the style of Colonial America.

The waitress was dressed up in colonial style clothing. The dinner menu is already pre-selected for each evening at a set price, unlike the lunch menu. Dinner is served in courses and the portions are unlimited. When you run out of a certain food dish, the waitress will bring you more of whatever you want.

This particular evening we first started out with our beverage, cold refreshing root beer. Our first course was a small salad followed by Peanut Soup, a favorite in Colonial Williamsburg and can be picked up in any store in the area. The soup is highly recommended and in a way it tastes like peanut butter, but in soup form. The main course arrived and the highlight of the meal was the root beer ham. Huge slices of ham simmered in root beer gave this ordinary meat a unique taste. The sides included seasoned green beans and mashed potatoes. There were two choices for dessert, bread pudding and peach cobbler, which you can order one or both.

During our dining experience, we were greeted with a very special guest. Mr. Shields showed up wearing his typical colonial style suit. He walked with a hunch and carried a cane but it didn’t slow him down any. He made his rounds to each table interacting with everyone and making you feel welcome at his tavern. At my table we talked about where I was from and when he found out that I was from North Carolina, he said it was nice to meet someone from a neighboring colony.

The atmosphere, Mr. Shield’s surprise appearance, and the wonderful food made my dining experience enjoyable. The root beer ham has now become one of my family’s favorite meals.

Reservations are not allowed for lunch but are required for dinner.

This was the least positive dining experience that we had in historic Williamsburg. Our waitress was not helpful, she seemed distracted and she never came back after delivering our food unless we flagged her down after our water glasses were already empty.

The food was interesting and we had mixed reviews. We both ordered the colonial sampler platter which included five foods typical to colonial Williamsburg. The samplings included an extremely spicy, thick gumbo (we were glad it was only a sample), two carrot fritters, which were crispy on the outside and moist and sweet with carrots on the inside, two fried oysters that were succulent and served with just a dab of a remoulade sauce, a biscuit with county ham pate (very salty!), and a very small amount of mushroom fricassee served in a bowl of roll (tasty but almost not there). By now, we were discovering that colonial dining is not Atkins friendly!

We ate lunch at Shields and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was good and the waiters are all in costume and character. The pub is authentically decorated and the food is served in the manner of colonial times.

My family enjoyed a Colonial Christmas dinner at Shield's Tavern. I had called several weeks in advance, and was told by the staff at Colonial Williamsburg that each tavern would be serving a different prix-fixe dinner on Christmas Day. The pricing was the same everywhere...$42.50 per person, including tea or coffee, tax, and tip.

On the menu at Shield's were rolls with butter, crab and pumpkin soup, tossed salad, venison stew, sweet potatoes, haricots verts, seafood paella, sweet and sour braised beef, pork chops, turkey with chestnut stuffing, Christmas pudding, and lemon bars. All of the food was served 18th-century family style (right down to the iron pot that the costumed waiter ladled our soup from) with unlimited seconds of everything, just for the asking. Most of the food was of high quality, although the turkey and stuffing did leave a bit to be desired. However, the ambience of the restaurant was what made our experience so memorable. As we were finishing our salad, a fully costumed bard strolled in singing Christmas carols. Mr. Shields himself paid us a visit as we finished our dessert. Since this was our last day in Williamsburg, spending Christmas in such a unique way created a lasting memory for us all.

We were unable to get dinner reservations but had lunch here twice. The food was great. Dining in the cellar is by candlelight. It added to the atmosphere. Mr. Shields, the tavern owner, did visit with the guests during one of our meals. He is very entertaining and adds to the colonial theme.
