If you are in New Orleans, no one should leave without trying a beignet. The best place to get some from is Cafe Du Monde. A beignet is delicious square of fried dough covered in powered sugar and comes as an order of three. Absolutely delicious, and it's located near the French Quarter at the end of the French market. And for those who love coffee, it's also a great place to get a cup of chicory coffee.

We stopped at Cafe Du Monde to have some French beignets. The beignets come out to your table hot and covered with powdered sugar. They melt in your mouth and are absolutely delicious.

Café Du Monde – A Sweet Place to Eat

I think almost anytime you mention New Orleans to someone, one of the top three things they associate with the city would have to be the delightful beignets served at the famous Café Du Monde. These little donut-like desserts are a must-eat for any traveler to the city. If you’re wondering what they taste like – think carnival funnel cake, only in little squares.

The best thing about these little wonders is that you can get three of them, with chicory coffee, for $3.50.

I’ve been told that the lines here can get pretty long, especially during peak times – think about avoiding them for breakfast or brunch. My first visit was on my first night in New Orleans at a bit after midnight. (It’s a 24/7 establishment.) Absolutely no line, but most of the tables were full. We chose one of the few free tables and plopped ourselves down. While open-air with an awning protecting us from the moonlight, the place reminded me of a '50s-era diner. Same kind of tables and chairs, with the waiters and waitresses in striped uniforms and paper hats.

I could hardly wait to sink my teeth into these warm little powdered-sugar treats. Oh, that’s the other thing. Expect to get the powdered sugar all over you. Don’t worry about your clothes - it’ll wash out - and until then, everyone in New Orleans will know – and be able to relate – that you ate at Café Du Monde. Plus, after one bite, it’s likely that you won’t care.

In order to savor the experience, I ate here once more before leaving the city, just so I could better remember them when I got home. Please don’t pass up Café Du Monde if you’re in the Big Easy.

The Café du Monde was established in 1862 and has been a New Orleans landmark ever since. No visit to New Orleans would be complete without a visit (or multiple visits) to Café du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait. The beignets are square, French-style donuts with a liberal sprinkle of powdered sugar served in orders of three. They are definitely not on the healthy foods list, but hey, who comes to New Orleans to eat healthily? Café au lait is a mix of half-strong chicory coffee and half-steamed milk - the perfect complement for the beignets. The café is an open-air restaurant that looks out onto Jackson Square and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (except Christmas).

The café is crowded at all hours. You will have to wait for your table, but don’t expect to be ushered in at the next empty table. When you reach the front of your line and you see someone getting up, bag the table immediately and then wait to get it cleaned; not the other way round or you’ll lose your table to the more experienced. Beignets and strong chicory coffee make a reliable hangover remedy after a night of revelry on Bourbon Street.

Black is the wrong colour to wear in this casual café. You will invariably be covered with specks of the powdered sugar as you tuck in the delightful beignets. My partner was, unfortunately, put off by the beignets when he became smothered in sugar dust and had an incredibly hard time dusting it off.

Cafe du Monde

On a trip to New Orleans, you have to stop, at least once (possibly many more times), at the Cafe du Monde. Their beignets, a fried pastry square covered with powdered sugar and served hot, come in a grouping of three and are wonderfully delicious. Try an order with a cafe au lait or some other coffee product. The Cafe du Monde started as a coffee stand and still only serve drinks (mainly coffee) and beignets. The Cafe is open 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas. The Cafe du Monde is a perfect place to stop for a snack while seeing the sights, or after a night on the town, or for breakfast, or...well any excuse is as good as the next for visiting the Cafe du Monde.
