This is a charming little Italian-run restaurant within sight of the Pacific Ocean in northern Santa Monica, just off the PCH. The decor is not particularly fancy, but the dim lighting, candles, and elegant white tablecloths make for a romantic setting. Caffe Delfini is not, however, a particularly well-kept secret -- we've had no trouble going without reservations on a weeknight, but have been told that reservations are essential on the weekends.
As for what to order, I have three suggestions. Gnocchi, gnocchi, and more gnocchi! The gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce is an artery-clogging delight -so creamy and delicious I'm sure it's barely legal. If you must order something else, there is an excellent selection of fresh seafood, including grilled swordfish and various pastas with seafood sauces. Vegetarians have many choices here (less for vegans). Don't forget to order an appetizer--there are many to choose from, but be sure to try the excellent mozzarella in some form. Top off your romantic dinner with one of a huge selection of fine wines, though they are more than a little overpriced.
The restaurant has only valet parking, but it is possible to find street parking if you don't mind a short walk.
