Camilla Grill

The Camilla Grill is a New Orleans mainstay...JUST opening back up in mid 2007 after being closed since hurricane Katrina. It's the kind of place locals adore, and some tourists just don't quite get.

The Camilla Grill is a diner...29 round stools bolted to the floor along a counter. You wait outside until there is a place for your party available. (Locals tell me the line can be quite long at times.) The cooks work in front of your eyes at a rapid pace. The server keeps things moving and the customers happy.

You don't go to the Camilla Grill for the food, really. My pecan waffle was good, the hamburgers smelled great, but the main attraction is the people...both customers and staff. It's the kind of place where you high-five the server when he takes your order. Leave your pretense back in your hotel room, and just go and enjoy.

In the uptown area, this place provides your best bet for greasy burgers and a shake. It is particularly popular with locals after a night of drinking, who seek this place out to solve their hunger pains. It's a lively place where everyone sits at the bar--there are no tables. This way, you can bump elbows with the tuxedo-dressed couple coming in for some grease after attending the Louisiana Philharmonic concert or overly-friendly college coeds who've stopped in with the frat bunch from nearby Tulane University. The cook/server wears a white uniform and will joke with you and make fun of you. But, above all, go for the chocolate shakes (made the old fashioned way), chili cheese fries, and a bacon burger. My stomach is growling already . . .

A diner-type place just past the corner of Carrollton and St. Charles. The streetcar practically drops you off on their doorstop. Great burgers and excellent pie. Don't leave without having a piece of dessert!
